The B List: Musicians Tell Fans To Shut The Fuck Up

Bob Weir did something he’s never done before in his 50+ year career on Monday night, when he walked off stage in the middle of a song thanks to a bunch of annoying talkers who wouldn’t keep quiet during his acoustic set. Weir had issues all night and couldn’t stop himself from yelling “shut the fuck up” towards the end of the show.

Bobby isn’t the only musician who’s had issues with talkative crowds. We’ve compiled ten instances of musicians openly showing their frustration at concerts. Watch as a wide variety of musicians ranging from Barbra Streisand to Lil Wayne to Kimock tell members of their audiences to shut the fuck up…

1. Jeff Tweedy has engaged obnoxious talkers on multiple occasions and here’s out favorite instance where he actually levels with the crowd by explaining the issue…

8. Here’s the rare case of one musician telling another musician to shut the fuck up, though this appears to be in jest. Watch as Dave Grohl tells Deadmau5, who is performing on another stage, to shut the fuck up at the 2011 T In The Park festival…

  1. mike doughty is famous for this. jeremy g and i personally saw him kick out a whole group of “frat boys” out of a show at williamsburg MH.

    p.s. they def deserved it

    1. Yes, Doughty. Easily my favorite talking at a show deally-

      http://archive.org/details/mdb2007-11-17.mdb2007-11-17.gefell200.flac16

Acoustic guitar + cello in a venue that doesn’t even have a stage. This is a show you don’t talk at. Doughty (who is certainly a bit of a primadonna) yells at the bartenders, and threatens to personally escort anyone talking out and replace them with someone from his MySpace (which he referred to as ‘a land of sorrow’ due to tickets selling out instantly) and being resold on Craigslist for $100. At this point, possibly the dumbest girl to walk the earth *yells out* that she scalped a ticket for $200 or something. Doughty is immediately like ‘Really? You owe me $150. I’m not gonna keep it, I’m gonna use it to buy drinks for everyone here.’ And he literally made her go to the bar, and put down like $130 on an open tab + a $20 tip for the bartenders. Such an amazing and hilarious night.

  2. Big fan of how Claypool handles his talkers:

“hey you! yes, you, in the white shirt. Was your only reason for coming here today so you could walk away knowing that I thought you’re kind of dick?”

“Hey asshole… seriously. I’m just trying to do my job here… I don’t come to your job and slap the dick out of your mouth…”

  3. I believe Bruce Hornsby has also walked off when the audience interruptions became too great. Just because you’ve bought a ticket doesn’t relieve you of your responsibilities to the performer or to other people in the audience who’ve paid to listen to the music. It’s all about having consideration for others.

  4. I remember a gig at the Knitting Factory in the 90s. John Zorn’s Masada was playing. In mid set, Secretary of State Madeline Albright walked in with Czeck Republic president Vaclav Havel, a well known jazz fan. They chatted and chatted and finally Zorn stopped playing, looked up to the balcony where Albright and Havel were sitting and shouted, “Shut the fuck up!” A classic
