Jackie Greene Impresses as Black Crowes Lead Guitarist

UPDATE 6:45PM ET: We came across of a video of the tour debut of Space Captain and added it.

We weren’t the only ones surprised to see The Black Crowes bring on Jackie Greene to fill the lead guitar role that Marc Ford, Paul Stacey and Luther Dickinson handled since 2005 for their new tour which kicked off on Sunday in England. Greene is more known for his singing voice, supporting work and versatility than for his ability to shred. However after listening to a handful of tracks from Sunday and a few videos from Monday, we’ve been very impressed with Greene’s contributions.

Not only does Greene add another dimension with his mandolin playing, but he’s delivered crushing guitar solos in lead-heavy songs such as Jealous Again, Wiser Time and Morning Song. Don’t take our word for it, here’s audio and video of the aforementioned tracks to see if you agree…

And this is only a show or two into what looks to be a busy year of touring for The Black Crowes. Let’s see where he’s at when the band hits America and starts diving deeper into their back catalog.

UPDATE: The Crowes have just finished the third show of the tour which took place at the 02 Academy in Glasgow, Scotland. We came across a video of the band’s tour debut cover of Space Captain by Joe Cocker featuring Jackie on lead guitar and backing vocals…

  1. Jackie Greene Totally Rocks. This tour will give the world a chance to see him shine. Rock on JG!

  2. Jackie is amazing. True musicians like Chris, weir, Lesh have known this. Crowes will surpass all expectations if they use his talent wisely. Just now realizing what is happening. This is THE band for people who appreciate great musicians.

  3. No surprise here. Mr. Greene is an amazing musician and songwriter. Yes, this tour will hopefully give him the world exposure he deserves. I suggest if you get the chance get out and see The Black Crowes with Jackie and enjoy the feeling a great artist will give you.

  4. Happy for Jackie. He is a hard working guy who’s music is honest & well crafted. He deserves some good press.

  5. Hmmm…saw em 30/03 and he was off. Moments of greatness but it appeared that he didn’t know the tunes so well. Even had a music stand in front of him.
Know he’s got some fine shoes to fill but not getting the notes or changing too soon shouldn’t be happening with a band like TBC. But, Hey! They gotta be happy with him or he wouldn’t be there. Just didn’t see it last night. Shame.

  6. Just back from Detroit, and JG was pretty impressive. There were a few slips but it’s definitely a dynamic change from the past 5 years. I love Luther, and I loved the Crowes with him…still missed him last night too; but it was a great show with new energy. It appears from our set (and the other set lists from this tour, thus far) that they are staying away from most of WP and BtF…

  7. JG should go back to Trigger Hippy now that he has more exposure and get that group moving to bigger venues. No comparison to Freak n Roll version of My Morning Song. MF was their best- too bad it didn’t work out the 2nd time around. Worse still that the band weren’t all clean themselves at this point in their lives that he felt his hard earned sobriety in jeopardy. Hope he has at least got his guitars and amps back by now since they were holding the equipment hostage!
