Foo Fighters were joined onstage by Kaki King Sunday night as the band wrapped up their UK tour at the 02 Arena in London.
The American guitarist made a surprise appearance with Dave Grohl for the acoustic instrumental ‘Ballad Of The Beaconsfield Miners’, taken from the band’s recent album ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’.
Introducing King, Grohl told the crowd: "Seen as though this is the last night of the tour we tend to do stuff we don’t normally do. I want to introduce you to one of my favourite guitar players in the whole fucking world, Kaki King. Say hi Kaki."
Before launching into the song, which was penned for two miners trapped in the Beaconsfield mine collapse, the singer also dedicated the track to Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page, who had earlier been watching the gig from the sidelines.
Grohl then left King to play her own instrumental as he praised her, admitting: "There are some guitar players that are good and there are some guitar players that are really fucking good. And then there’s Kaki King."
Later the band also teamed up with System Of A Down singer and support act Serj Tankian who sang vocals on a cover of Dead Kennedys classic ‘Holiday In Cambodia’ after the Foos played Arcade Fire‘s ‘Keep The Car Running’, who were also in town for their own performance at Alexandra Palace.
The show marked an eventful two days for the Foo Fighters after Queen guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor joined the band for a cover of ’39’ the night before – just over a year after the duo joined the band onstage at Hyde Park in the summer of 2006.
The mammoth performance, which ran for over two hours, saw the band blast through six songs off their recent album including hit single ‘The Pretender’ before a second stage was lowered into the middle of the venue for an acoustic section, similar to the band’s sessions last summer.
Backed by a full seven-piece band, which also included guitarist Pat Smear, violinist Jessy Green, percussionist Drew Hester and pianist Rami Jaffee, the band played five tracks as Grohl introduced and bantered with each band member.
Heckling Hester for "breaking his fucking triangle" the previous night, the singer was left speechless when his bandmate pulled a giant triangle out of the blue.
As drummer Taylor Hawkins took up vocal duties on ‘Cold Day In The Sun’ he joked: "Before I introduce the most important person in the band I’d like to say if it wasn’t for Dave Grohl we’d all be serving cheeseburgers somewhere," before the singer chipped in: "You’d probably would be dude but they would be fucking good cheeseburgers at that."
Wrapping up the show, Grohl hinted at another imminent UK tour in the near future. "Thanks for coming to see the show," he added. "Drinks are on me next time we play which is sooner than you think. Can we please come back soon?"
The band ended the gig with a belting rendition of ‘Best Of You’ which saw the whole venue singing along to the hit single.
