Video: Phish Inducts Genesis Into Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame

Just over three years ago Phish was given the honor of inducting one of their biggest influences, Genesis, into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at a ceremony held in at the Waldorf-Astoria in New York City on March 15, 2010. Phish front man Trey Anastasio gave the speech inducting Genesis into the Rock Hall, while the quartet performed Watcher of the Skies and No Reply At All.

Recently, an exceptional rip of both of Phish’s performances, Trey’s speech and Genesis’s acceptance surfaced on YouTube. We had fun revisiting Phish’s lone turn in the Rock Hall spotlight as of yet and we’re hopeful they will one day get the same honor they bestowed on Genesis as they’re officially eligible starting next year. Check out this outstanding footage from 2010…

  1. I could listen to Trey and the rest of Phish talk all day, I really wish they would do a few more interviews as a whole band. The interviews from the early 90’s were classic Phish hilarity.

  2. When Trey said “people know what im talking about..” I swear Phil said “I don’t know what hes talking about..” when they put the camera on him.

  3. Totally agree with Josh V.! A Halloween Lamb Lies Down on Broadway would be phantastic!! Maybe with Fluff’s Travels in the encore since it was influenced, at least in name, by Duke’s Travels. I hope Phish was not turned-off by what appears to be Genesis’ aloofness. It must be hard for Genesis to receive any sort of industry praise since they were basically the poster child for the punk movement’s hatred (along with ELP). Loved by millions, but hated by the very vocal critics. And yeah, throw Watcher of the Skies into rotation!

  4. You can tell Trey really loves them – whereas they themselves seem to be a little tired of it after so many years. Tony and Mike were always rather quiet and shy – very upper crust English boarding school – and the combination of physical ailments, divorces and absolute raking over the coals he’s gotten from pop culture and music critics alike has clearly made Phil less cheerful in his old age.

To be fair, I don’t think we give Phil his due. Trey does a serviceable imitation of Peter on Watcher of the Skies, but he’s struggling to duplicate Phil’s vocal on No Reply At All. Might have had more luck with Turn It On Again. That Phil was able to both fill in Peter’s cerebral and whimsical vocal parts after he left, while creating an equally difficult to imitate vocal persona of his own (desperate earnestness cloaked in playful bravado)? The “let’s crap on Phil Collins & post Gabriel Genesis” of the critics has kept him from getting the credit he deserves.

Would have loved to hear them do the short 2 minute ditty Horizons since Steve was there – gorgeous little piece. Ripples or Afterglow would have also been very nice choices.
