Phish Releases Live Bait Volume 9 + SPAC Webcast

Each summer for the last few years Phish archivist Kevin Shapiro has put together a compilation of tracks from past shows at cities or venues where the quartet will play as freely available (for a limited time in MP3 format) Live Bait collections at LivePhish.com. We’ve been patiently waiting for the 9th installment of Live Bait and it’s finally here.

Live Bait9

The compilation includes nine tracks:

Foam – 11/2/1994 @ Bangor Auditorium, Bangor ME
A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing – 6/19/2004 @ SPAC, Saratoga Springs NY
The Moma Dance – 7/6/2000 @ Molson Amphitheatre, Toronto ON
Split Open and Melt > Kung > Jam – 7/15/1999 @ PNC Bank Arts Center, Holmdel NJ
Mike’s Song > Twist > Weekapaug – 7/9/1999 @ Merriweather Post Pavilion, Columbia MD
David Bowie – 6/15/1995 @ Lakewood Amphitheatre, Atlanta GA
AC/DC Bag > Ghost – 11/07/1998 @ UIC Pavilion, Chicago IL
Tube > Slave To The Traffic Light – 7/16/1998 @ The Gorge, George WA
Undermind – 8/31/2012 @ Dick’s Sporting Goods Park, Commerce City CO

Yesterday, a group of fans stumbled upon the LivePhish.com link for compilation leading to many being able to download Live Bait 9 early. This has given us ample opportunity to sample the wondrous goods Mr. Shapiro has shared with us and we can’t get enough of most of these tracks. The Foam shows off an extremely tight Phish with Trey Anastasio machine gunning his way to glory during the solo.  When Phish dropped the insane SPAC A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing as just the second version of the tune ever, we knew we had another monster jam song on our hands. The Toronto Moma Dance features a ferocious solo, while the PNC Split > Kung > Jam may be the highlight of the whole compilation thanks to its full-band improv wizardry.

A trip to Merriweather in 1999 for the Mike’s > Twist > Weekapaug makes for a fun listen thanks to Sweet Emotion, Spooky and Macarena teases and quotes. The Atlanta ’95 Bowie shows off some of the best elements of Phish’s jamming during the Summer of ’95. An AC/DC Bag > Ghost sequence from a three-night stand at Chicago’s UIC Pavilion in 1998 makes us thirsty for the days of long, jammed-out Bags, while the Gorge ’98 Tube > Slave To The Traffic Light absolutely smokes. To make sure we realize the band’s best days may not be behind us, Shapiro ends Live Bait Vol. 9 with a scorching Undermind from last summer.

Head to LivePhish.com to download Live Bait Vol. 9.

In addition the band will webcast all three nights of SPAC.

  1. Is this the same A Song I Heard as they put as the opener on the “summer sampler” cd they gave us on the way in to coventry?
