Want to Buy a Record Store on eBay? Anybody?

On the Beat Records

I normally use the eBay “Buy it Now” feature to purchase used records, not used record stores. But maybe I’m the weird one: This incredibly unexpected eBay listing gives old-school music fanatics a chance to own On the Beat Records, “a classic vinyl collectors record store in central London.”

As The Guardian notes, the shop (which features a spread of jazz, rock, pop, soul, folk, and country) was founded 34 years ago, but owner Tim Derbyshire has decided it’s time to move on and “let another passionate music lover take over.” That passionate music lover could be you — if you have a spare £300,000 (the starting bid).

And if you’re interested, you’d better get busy: Only 19 days remain on the auction, and the listing is currently being “watched” by 519 music nerds (or unlikely businesspeople). Of the six offers made, five are pending and one was declined.

My only pre-bid question: How much is shipping?

“Live your dream and enter a rock’n’roll lifestyle – your chance to run a record shop!,” reads the listing. If it’s your dream (as it is mine) to become a wannabe record store jerk from High Fidelity, this is a golden opportunity.
