Mike Doughty Plots Two New Albums For 2014

Mike Doughty will release two new albums in 2014, and has partnered with PledgeMusic.com – http://PledgeMusic.com to invite fans into the recording process from the beginning.

Up first is “Live at Ken’s House,” planned for an early summer release, and featuring Doughty and the band from his fall 2013 tour (bassist Catherine Popper and drummer Pete Wilhoit) performing songs originally written for Doughty’s former band, Soul Coughing. The live album will include a number of songs that were not included on Doughty’s September 2013 album Circles Super Bon Bon…,on which he reinvented 13 Soul Coughing songs.

Then, in late autumn, Doughty will release Stellar Motel, his eighth solo studio album (and first in three years). Doughty is again working with DJ Good Goose, who produced “Circles Super Bon Bon…,” and fans can expect a more beat-driven, modern-day hip-hop foundation to the album than on previous solo outings. “Good Goose is really, in his heart, a pop guy,” Doughty says, “and there’s a pop element that’s pretty big. It might not be a great idea to say I’ve been listening to a lot of Katy Perry and Rihanna — though, in fact, I have.” Special guests on the album will include Doughty’s cellist and longtime sidekick, Andrew “Scrap” Livingston; rappers Big Dipper, Miss Eaves, J-Boogie, MC Frontalot, and Hand Job Academy; horn-driven dance band Moon Hooch; and Kim, vocalist from the Japanese band Uhnellys.

Incentives to pledge range from signed CDs and vinyl of the new releases to exclusive T-shirts and posters to private house concerts. Also up for grabs are the original, handwritten lyrics to Soul Coughing’s “Janine” and “True Dreams of Wichita,” rare photo prints from a mid-1990s shoot, the guitar and bass used to record the new album, and the buyer’s choice of lyrics typed by Doughty himself on a vintage IBM Selectric typewriter.
