Portishead’s Geoff Barrow and Composer Ben Salisbury Score Alex Garland’s Directorial Debut EX MACHINA

Portishead’s Geoff Barrow and Composer Ben Salisbury have scored Alex Garland’s SCI-Fi film Ex Machina. The film, released on April 10, 2015 and distributed by A24, marks the directorial debut of AGarland, screenwriter of Dredd, Sunshine, and 28 Days Later.

The cast includes Oscar Isaac (Inside Llewyn Davis, Star Wars Episode VII), who casts the lure “you’re gonna be the human component in a Turing test” to Domnhall Gleeson — the Turing test being the gradient upon which artificial intelligence is measured against human intelligence.  Along the way, Gleeson encounters a fetching android, played by Alicia Vikander.

According to the press release, “Barrow and Salisbury met over 10 years ago when they both joined a Bristol football team for old men.  After many disastrous games they decided they might be more productive working on a music project together.”

The trailer (below) is rife with mountainscapes of the Prometheus vein, conjuring the same sense of unease that accompanied A24’s Under the Skin.
