Van Halen to Release First Live Album with David Lee Roth, ‘Tokyo Dome Live in Concert’

Van Halen will release its first-ever live album to feature original singer David Lee Roth. Recorded on June 21, 2013 at the famed Tokyo Dome in Tokyo, Japan, TOKYO DOME LIVE IN CONCERT includes 23 songs, spanning all seven of the band’s albums with Roth. It will be released as a double CD; four-LP set on 180-gram vinyl; and digitally beginning March 31, 2015.

Fans who pre-order Tokyo Dome Live In Concert before its March 31 release date through Amazon and digitally at iTunes will instantly receive downloads of “Panama” and “Runnin’ With The Devil.” Go to http://van-halen.com/ for updates and more information.

Van Halen reinvented the sound of hard rock in 1978 with its influential and wildly successful eponymous debut album and then achieved even greater success six years later with 1984. Both albums would define a generation while selling more than 10 million copies each in the U.S. alone to earn diamond-certification from the RIAA. The band recently went back to the original analog tapes and remastered both of these landmark albums – Van Halen and 1984 – which are now also set for release on March 31, 2015 through Warner Bros. Records with pre-orders through Amazon available now

Mastering engineer Chris Bellman, who remastered the original albums for Bernie Grundman Studios, Hollywood, CA, was enlisted for these new versions. In order to produce the original sound the band intended, Bellman cut straight from the quarter-inch tapes for CD; for 180-gram vinyl; and for the digital version. Newly mastered versions of Diver Down, Women and Children First, Van Halen II and Fair Warning are also being cut for each format and will be available soon.

TOKYO DOME LIVE IN CONCERT features an electrifying performance by singer David Lee Roth, guitarist Eddie Van Halen, drummer Alex Van Halen, and bassist Wolfgang Van Halen. Mixed by award-winning engineer and mixer Bob Clearmountain (Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Roxy Music, Nine Inch Nails, and many more), and mastered by Chris Bellman, the album features such classic anthems as “Dance The Night Away,” “Beautiful Girls,” “And The Cradle Will Rock…” “Unchained,” and “Everybody Wants Some!!” as well as blistering versions of “Tattoo,” “She’s The Woman,” and “China Town” from the group’s most recent studio album, A Different Kind of Truth.

A deluxe collection featuring Tokyo Dome Live In Concert and the newly remastered Van Halen and 1984 albums, as both a four-CD set and a six-LP vinyl set in special packaging, will also be available.

  1. I’ve seen them a couple times in the “new/old” format with DLR back in front but without Michael Anthony on bass. The shows are good: the sound is great and the staging/video support is awesome…of course the classic fans like me want the original line-up but apparently that’s not going to happen…I’ll take real Van Halen any way I can get them. BTW: I think Sammy is better on his own anyway: I never liked Van Hagar and one of the best concerts I’ve ever been to was when he supported Lynerd Skynerd and they had to cancel so Sammy did a set of Montrose and then did a set with Waboritas: the Montrose set stole the show and I’ve been a fan ever since.

  2. Hah… took nearly 2 years because they’ll have to overdub all of DLR’s parts.

Hey, Dave, maybe you should consider another profession since you’re a singer that can’t sing.

    1. Listen douche
DLR doesn’t use audio tune on his voice like you’re favorite singer Justin Timberlake. DLR is for real and you are not (vh fan) go to hell

    1. Trust me J…I was at the 1983 US Festival show and DLR was so drunk by the time they came on that it’s no wonder they never released it. He sang about 1/3 of the songs horribly at the US Festival. Pray for a DVD release of the Meadowlands 1984 Tour show which was fabulous.

    1. Half true half not true which means your comments are hysterical. I agree I wish it was the same but they still pump thunder

  3. I’ve heard the pre release singles (Runnin’ With The Devil/Panama) and all I can say is pretty much this:

This is the live album they should have done 30 years ago after the 1984 tour when diamond dave could still sing, what I heard on those two preview tracks is seriously disappointing for so many reasons not the least of which is that dave just can’t sing live anymore.

This isn’t going to be a “big sendoff” for the band it’s just a collection filler contractual obligation live album release.

In all honesty david lee roth should just retire and eddie should just make wolfgang the singer, sure he’s got no charisma but at least he can actually sing on tune and in key.

  4. They should give the fans what they really want — the entire 1981 Oakland show on Blu-ray remastered with 5.1 surround sound. Even throw in an extra hour of behind-the-scenes stuff like Dave getting frisky with 7 or 8 girls on the tour bus, or maybe Alex destroying a hotel room while Mikey blows up the toilets.

We all know VH used to the be the ultimate bad boys — now release a vintage show to prove it.

    1. I was at that show (my 4th time seeing them), the night after graduation! Still the most memorable VH show of the 10 total I have seen. I would love to see that night released to video, especially with today’s sound enhancements. Long live the greatest rock band EVER!!!

  5. Love the old VH stuff, but come on…..recorded almost 2 years ago?!?!? Did it take that long to remaster? How about some NEW SONGS, instead of cashing in on the old stuff? Might as well put out another ‘greatest hits…volume 5’.

  6. Nobody’s looking to hear Van Wolfie on a live lp, give us a proper classic VH live album from the 70s or early 80s.

  7. I know Im going to buy it. And I dont buy music any more. But this is exciting. Nobody lays it down like Van Halen.; Im no Wolfie fan I love Mike and his awesome high voice and bad ass bass. come home Mike ! Bless Em! cant wait!

  8. Shame on the VH brothers for putting out this garbage. A live album with Roth 30 years past the glory days is just insulting to a listener’s eardrums and intelligence.

      1. Dave, I’ve read your string of comments. Are you DLR? That could be the only person who would defend DLR’s horrible vocals. I’ve heard DLR was working with John5. That can only be because John5 has respect for DLR’s past and pity for his current state. Dave, if you are DLR, PLEASE sit down and listen to your voice objectively, and bow out quickly.

  9. I heard the tracks for Panama and Running with the Devil, from the new album. Do you self a favor and don’t waste your money on this steaming pile of cow flop. The music is good, but that is it. The harmonies are not there, and Dave’s singing sucks so bad that there is no way to accurately describe how sh**ty it is.

  10. I heard the two pre-release tracks and all I can say is this will be the one Van Halen album I will not be purchasing. I found bootlegs of the Balance tour and even the tour with Cherone in 98 and they all sounded a million times better (vocally) than this one. Even the bootleg of the concert in Charlotte in 07 when the tour first started was a million times better than this one. Now don’t get me wrong, the band sounds amazing and it is obvious that Eddie is sober now and he sounds the best he ever has. Alex sounds amazing and surprisingly Wolfie sounds really polished at this point. But Roth sounds more like a muppets character who doesn’t know what he is doing.
On the records Roth sounds great, in the recording from Charlotte in 97 he sounded good (not outstanding but he could hold his own), but this is a train wreck vocally I have to sit and say “why would they release this embarrassment when there are much better recordings in the archives I am sure. I think it is very possible thy Roth will be on his way out after this release because it is going to stain the band in a real bad way. And I found it interesting that in the Smithsonian discussion Eddie said “I don’t know where Roth is” and alluded to “i think he might be living in Japan”. No found that comment interesting.
Now I see some comments here about hoping Mikey would return. And though I think Mikey is the superior bass player and background vocalist there are other factors to look at. First of all Mikey signed away all his royalty and licensing rights. On top of that family loyalty is a big thing with the Van Halen brothers, do you really think that Eddie would allow his son to get the boot? Do you think Alex would want to be the bad guy and give his nephew the boot? Let’s get real here. The only way Mikey would return or could return, is if Wolfie decided that his gig with the other band or his solo project is something he wishes to devote all his time to. But I don’t see that happening. And I think that the Van Halen brothers would be resistant to him making a departure.
In terms of Sammy. In 95 when i saw them on tour Sammy was at the top of his game and was an amazing vocalist. Now that was 20 years ago too (man how time flies). Sammy is still a great vocalist but I don’t think his voice is to the standard it once was either. His voice now is far superior to Roth’s but if the fans expect another 5150 then they will be disappointed. I really don’t know if that magic can be rekindled and I think Sammy’s book (whether accurate or not is irrelevant) did some un-repairable damage. And I don’t think he would return without Mikey.
Cherone, also a great vocalist, check out him at the Queen tribute in 92. But his voice has not held up the best either and I think Van Halen III was too much of a departure that, that will not happen either.
Can Van Halen return from this? Of course. In fact I think they can not only rekindle their glory days but go to new heights. There is no denying the talent is still there, the experience is on their side and the formula is still there. But they need to learn to control Dave. The fact is, that will not be a small task, and I don’t know if it is probable but it is possible. I mean, look at the Roth Show for instance, Dave has an odd way of thinking and is still unpredictable. And what he does makes sense in his own mind I am sure. But he needs to be controlled on stage somehow. In the studio he is controlled, he sings the songs straight forward but on stage his creativity is misdirected. H tries to skat and causes the clash of rythem with the songs that cause it to be a train wreck. If he can be controlled on stage and if he can stay focused with less of the antics on stage and focus on his singing, I think he could become better than he ever was. He seems to have a thing for the old crooners like Sinatra when he sings Panama and tries to replicate that in how own style and the fact is……it doesn’t work and causes many issues. If Steven Tyler can do a song with Chris Botti (the Jazz trumpet player) I think Dave could do the same to get a feel for it, in maybe a solo album to get it out of his system. He can do the crooner stuff over there and do the Van Halen stuff as Van Halen over here. And to be honest I think Dave could actually do a jazz standards album and do well with it. Maybe that is what he needs to do, take a year, do that, Wolfie with be touring with his various projects. And then come back and see where they are at after that point. Because I don’t think Van Halen can survive a 4th lead singer. The styles of Cherone and Roth and Hagar would make it almost impossible and Van Halen fans are aging. I’m in my mid-thirties and wasn’t a fan till around 94 I think the fans need familiarity. We saw some outrage when Wolfie took over one bass and that has kinda cooked down. But I don’t think a 4th lead singer can be bounced back from.
