Grousing The Aisles: A Mixed Bag

Phish 07/26/98 SBD/AUD MATRIX (320kbps MP3, FLAC):

This entry is dedicated to the handicapped — God bless you all. At most venues, hearing-impaired customers are given hearing-aid style listening devices, which allow them to hear the music more clearly by way of an FM feed from the soundboard. One ingenious taper at this Phish show from Dallas performed a great service: He taped the feed coming through this device and combined it with his audience tapes to create an incredible matrix that sounds amazing.

The Reba from this show is a revelation, and the second set starts off strong with a tight La Grange and a jammed-out You Enjoy Myself. Other highlights include a rare Too Much of Everything, as well as the band’s first performance of Neil Young’s Albuquerque. Let’s hear it for the hearing impaired!

Eric Clapton 07/16/83 SBD (320kbps mp3, FLAC):

Red Rocks is an amazing venue, but most audience tapes from the storied stones sound like absolute shit. That’s why I was extremely happy to see a soundboard from Eric Clapton’s only performance “on the rocks” make the rounds this week.

Clapton has played with a variety of musicians over the years, including one of my favorite bassists Donald “Duck” Dunn. Check out this awesome show from 1983 that features Dunn laying it down and Clapton playing some ridiculous leads throughout. Lay Down Sally and Let It Rain sound particularly sweet, and the Layla is about as ragin’ as a Disco Biscuits show. Untz, untz!

moe. 02/10/07 DAUD (FLAC, MP3, STREAM):

moe. is on fire right now, both musically and commercially. In promoting The Conch, moe. has added a bunch of songs to their repertoire, which should silence those such as myself that felt the band played the same songs over and over again. As they tour the country now, moe. is selling out more venues than ever before and hopefully will capitalize on this surge in their fanbase.

This past Saturday night, moe. treated their fans to a three-set show featuring bustouts, guests and an acoustic set. That’s a trifecta that left many moe.rons with permagrins that lasted the rest of the weekend. Highlights include the rare San Ber’dino, a rippin’ McBain that saw the return to the stage of former Disco Biscuit Sam Altman (as well as current Biscuits Aron Magner and Marc Brownstein) for a take on Bisco’s Cyclone, and a powerful second set ending combo of Lazurus > Dr. Graffenberg > Buster. Make sure to check out this torrent to hear a band that’s clearly on top of its game right now.

Have you downloaded any interesting shows this week? Let’s hear it…

  1. I’ve been listening to that Clapton show for a few days…man, musta been nice to see him back in the day. Some people call him the most overrated guitarist in history — I really don’t get that at all.

  2. Hmmm…it may be time for me to check in with moe. Past shows have been enjoyable affairs, although I completely agree with you on their song selection. I think I was at a show one time where the setlist was somehow inexplicably Meat>Meat>Meat>New York City>Meat. It happened. Go ask Jesse Jarnow.

And as for downloading that Clapton show, you had me at the photo of a pipe-smoking Donald Duck Dunn. We really need more pip-smoking bassists. Duck may be my favorite pipe-smoking bassist. (wait for it…) Except for Frankie Goes To Hollywood’s! HIGH-oh!!!!!!!!!!!! (Man, that dated me, didn’t it?)

  3. JC – nugs net has a crappy copy of the show, not the “soundboard matrix” that was released this week and is featured in this column
