Judging by the well-deserved $31.2 million opening-weekend haul, I’m guessing many of youse also patronized to the local cineplex to see Superbad at some point. Donning my Captain Obvious cape here, I think this may very well be the funniest movie from start to finish you’ll see in years.
But more than that, for all its comedic brilliance, I was floored by its quality — this is a damn fine film. Most comedies these days are nothing more than a collection of sketches sewn together unimpressively. Not this flick: Superbad is this generation’s Dazed & Confused. So if you haven’t yet, I’d suggest you make a beeline.
That was a weekend event, though…let’s look back at The Week That Was:
- Like when he’s groupies, Ryan Adams pulls out of moe.down
- Hey, who’s that redheaded dude playing with that retarded guy?
- Now we’ve seen it all: A cop with a hula hoop
- We said goodbye to the incomparable Max Roach (and so did ?uestlove and Ethan Iverson of The Bad Plus)
- Speaking of death, we celebrated 30 years of Elvis’ legacy
- NYC gets another new venue, albeit one with a horrific name
- Bring your kids over to Nels Cline’s house; bring calamine lotion
- Check out Sharptoe’s photos of the Pearl Jam show at The Vic
- And don’t forget the good shit: MP3 Boot Camp, Grousing the Aisles, Stormy Mondays and the Pullin’ ‘Tubes archives
