SONG PREMIERE: Caleb Warren and the Perfect Gentlemen – “Hoke Poole Stomp”

Caleb Warren and the Perfect Gentlemen reignite the music of old-timey speakeasies and juke joints while blendin timeless traditions of Americana and Western Swing with a fresh flavor that transcends genre. Their acoustic brass ‘n’ brew-grass tunes include raucous barnburners and heart-breaking ballads that continue to intoxicate audiences with performances of the highest spirits.

Caleb Warren and the Perfect Gentlemen is led by the compelling crooner Caleb Warren, whose engaging lyrics and rhythm guitar keeps the audience swingin’ and swayin’. He’s accompanied by Colt Bowen (percussion), Dave Aitken (lead guitar and banjo), Jenna Mobley (fiddle), Robert Green (trumpet), and their newest member Ian Blanton (upright bass). Caleb Warren hails from Chattanooga, TN while the rest of the band is based in Atlanta, GA. A few of their influences include Django Reinhardt, Jimmie Rodgers, and Tampa Red. Their inspiring ability to communicate and stay in sync, despite their technical complexity, is only surpassed by their strong solos and independent personalities that come across in their performances as individuals and a lively unified organism with a truly organic sound.

Glide is premiering Caleb Warren and the Perfect Gentlemen’s new swinging track “Hoke Poole Stomp,” that shows the band’s prowess of creating an atmosphere of unadulterated elation. In a landscape filled with soulless old timey music wanna-bees, Caleb Warren and the Perfect Gentlemen are the real deal and emanate nothing but pure intentions with tight rhythms, adventurous interplay and soulful vocals.

“The “Hoke Poole Stomp” is a tune we wrote for a close friend of ours, Mr. Zachary Hoke Poole Waits, the song’s namesake,” says Warren. “He moved a long distance away last year, so the song is a kind of “farewell for now” and “safe travels” from the band to him. Rather than a slow and somber ballad, though, we decided to have fun with it and make it a rowdy, swinging, dance tune. The song is an instruction on how to do the “The Hoke Poole Stomp,” which consists of just two moves—having a drink and getting onto the dance floor.”

“We approached the recording session for the new single in a completely different manner than our past recordings,” continues Warren. “Instead of going into a traditional studio, we wanted to try something a bit experimental for us that was commonplace in the field recordings of the 1930s and ’40s that we love. We set up in our wonderful fiddle player Ms. Jenna Shea Mobley’s living room with our good friend and accomplished recording engineer Tony Terrebonne behind the boards—or the dining room table as it were—and tracked almost totally live. With this new single, we were hoping to capture the energy and feeling of our live performances, and what better way than to literally perform it live. We overdubed the gang vocals on the song, and it was very loose in a good way. We were just having fun. On some takes we said the wrong words or made ridiculous noises—if we’re being honest, this is pretty standard practice for our band—and just ended up keeping a lot of it in there, including the laughter at the end of the song. We hope that sense of fun comes across and makes all the folks who listen feel good and get up and dance to it.”
