The Week That Was: I Wish I Wasn’t There

I’d call this a full weekend, with bright spots abound. I watched two friends enter the eternal bond of matrimony then walk back down the aisle to the sounds of Uncle Pen. I sat mesmerized as Andrew Bird tore up the Beacon with one of the best performances of the year (review forthcoming). I enjoyed a rare Sunday victory for the New York Jets over a sorry, sorry rival and applauded continued success from a Liverpool club firing on all cylinders.

ImNotThere

The only down moments came during my Saturday screening of Todd Haynes’ I’m Not There, a film that had no business being billed as “a Bob Dylan biopic,” and not even adding a “quasi” before the last word could have sufficed. It certainly had its moments, the soundtrack rocks and either Jim James or Hillbilly Jim has a great cameo, but I thought it was more profoundly confusing than profound and more overthought than overly clever. I’d recommend seeing it, but only when it hits your local cable provider. But let’s now take a look back at the week that was at Hidden Track…

  1. Ace, give it some time. I’m Not There is pretty damn fascinating, and it kinda grows on you. My original review was pretty lukewarm but the more I thought about it, there more I liked it. In any case, a straight foward biopic a la Ray about Dylan would’ve been terrible. Cate Blanchett is obviously having a blast, and hey — Charlotte Gainsbourg!

  2. You may be right…and I agree that a straight biopic would have been terrible. But as my friend said, it was just a silly attempt to not glorify the man by glorifying him by not glorifying him.

I hope people like it more than I did…I don’t hate on anything for hating’s sake. I genuinely couldn’t wait for it to end.

  3. Thats an awesome picture of Hillbilly Jim! I am currently located in Bowling Green, KY. Home of Hillbilly Jim and Sam Bush. Beat that!

Hillbilly Jim also jams around here alot. I think him and Sam Bush should form a group. THAT would be epic.
