  1. Dayjob wins a pair of tickets for tonight…contest is still open (til 5 pm EST or so) for the five-night pass and every subsequent day. Just answer our query. And if you have a specific date in mind, feel free to leave that.

  2. Rick Wakeman would have to be number 1, not only for his talent, but also his influence, and ultimately his establishment of the keyboard in rock music and as a staple of prog-rock.

If this is a successful submission, I’m only available for the 10th or the 31st.

    Thanks.

  3. Thought I would cast my vote for Bill Evans as best pianist of all time. His sense of space and timing was unparalled. Also, a quick word of note; if Firehouse had a keyboardist, that keyboardist would have been awesome.

  4. 5. Bruce Hornsby
    4. Brent Mydland
    3. Marco Benevento
    2. Page McConnell
    1. Rolph the Dog (the Muppet Show)

  5. My favorite, who I was lucky enough to see again last week with Victor Wooten AND Al Di Meola – Chick Corea.

  6. My favorite keyboardist of all time has to be Joe Zawinul. He merged together two different worlds of music, the electronic improvisation and the traditional jazz piano, in a way that had never been done. Not only was he a talented pianist, he was a brilliant songwriter and band leader. Never before has anyone caused so many jaw-dropping musical moments for myself as Mr. Zawinul.

I definitely think that Marco’s style is based thoroughly in Zawinul influences. Not only in his electronic sounds that he creates, but his comping, off-time rhythms, and tasteful solos. Two amazing musicians. RIP Joe.

  7. jimmy smith, hammond b-3 pioneer who really led the revolution for the B3 to not just be for barbershop quartets or hockey rinks. my pops would play this guy’s stuff on vinyl for me when i was young along with a handful of other great jazz pioneers. As a lover of the Hammond B-3, Jimmy Smith is my man. Robert Walter is my new-school choice.

  8. As a Long Islander I cannot pick anybody besides the pianoman himself Mr. Billy Joel. This self-proclaimed pianoman has been keeping the faith since the early 70s. “You may be right, I may be crazy, but it just might be a lunatic you’re looking for” fucking gold.

  9. Without doubt, the one and only Sir John Medeski.

Can’t believe I am the first one to list him.

Anyone who has ever seen MMW do an acoustic show would testify to this as well.

I already have tickets to the 1/24 show but would love 1/17 or 1/31 (or the 5 night pass of course)

  10. I’m insulted that Thelonious has yet to be mentioned.

Holmes has been dead for 25 years and he’s, imo, still the one to beat.

  11. Herbie Hancock…. talk about a guy who was able to synthesize rock jazz and soul into one monster… plus he played and hung with Miles… so right there he is top of my list…. POST BOP 4 Life…

  12. Tough one..
Either John Medeski, Garth Hudson or…..the dude from the Bad Plus.

    Boom! Shake Shake the Room!

  13. I’m surprised no one has mentioned Brad Mehldau…

Other obvious favorites would have to be Jimmy Smith, Herbie Hancock, Jan Hammer

  14. Not sure if the contest is still going, but my favorite keys player of all time is James Booker. The great Piano Prince of New Orleans. He was one of those crazy individuals who had a fire and a spark to his playing that made for an incredibly strong artistic voice. He was unpredictable, which makes it sound like he was a hard person to deal with– but it makes for some incredible music.

Favorite living keyboard player is Ivan Neville. He knows when to play and when not to play. Incredibly tasteful.
