Yay, Trey: Big Red Cleans Up His Act

Nearly every mention of Trey Anastasio’s name over the past year has been attached to negative news, so we’re glad to report some good red news.

The former Space Antelope co-founder — sorry, old habits die hard — shared the story of his rise and fall, as well as a brand new tune, with a group of recovering addicts in Schuylerville, NY just outside of Saratoga Springs a week ago. Trey’s three-hour master class was put together by Road Recovery, a non-profit organization devoted to educating young adults about the benefits of living sober.

Trey, who has passed every drug test he’s faced since starting his drug court program, shared the following insights on Road Recovery’s website: “Road Recovery is a beacon of light in a dark and confusing world. Addiction is so tricky and insidious and community is the cure. Road Recovery is all about community, a great organization with amazing programs. I’m so happy to be sober and grateful to be in the company of people getting the point early!”

We’re glad to see the Bad Lieutenant seemingly happy and healthy, trying to help other people fight their demons. Let’s hope Trey continues his recovery, as selfishly we’d like to see him play good music in public…sometime soon.

  1. It’s great to see Trey reaching out and helping others…I guess this was probably court-ordered, but still, I love knowing that he’s getting some good use out of this bad spin.

  2. I was so happy to read this when I saw it on the roadrecovery website.

As far as it being “court-ordered,” someone on the Umphrey’s message board claims that someone he knows has the inside info that it was completely voluntary. I know, I know, “through the grapevine” to the max, so take it for what its worth. But still, I’d like to think its true.

Like I said somewhere else in response to this, its so refreshing to hear good news like this. It pisses me off to hear people bash Trey so hard for making a human mistake. Give the guy some slack. Nothing good can come of being bitter and harsh towards the man and his situation. Nothing good for him or us.
