HT Giveaway: Zappa Plays Zappa DVDs

I’ve probably had about ten or 15 friends who’ve been lucky enough to catch a Zappa Plays Zappa show, and each one of them came back raving about what an incredible show Dweezil and his band put on. If you haven’t had a chance to check out the show in person, now you can enjoy ZPZ at home. Next Tuesday, Razor and Tie Entertainment will release the long-awaited Zappa Plays Zappa DVD.

The Zappa Plays Zappa DVD collection combines two concerts from 2006, where the band presented a collection of Frank Zappa’s rock-oriented compositions from the 1960s through the 1980s. Dweezil hand-selected the tracks himself, and the DVDs feature over three hours of performances. A limited edition fanpack will also be available which features the two-DVD set and three CDs containing the entire audio content, totaling 270 minutes.

You can pick up your copy of the DVDs from your favorite retailer, but as part of the Everybody Wins When We Plug Something And In Return They Offer Us Free Shit To Give Away we’ve got three copies of the Zappa Plays Zappa DVD set up for grabs. Just follow the rules below:

  1. One Size Fits All

    Andy de vine (de vine)
    Had a thong rind (rind)
    It was sublime (sublime)
    But the wrong kind
    Andy!

  2. Joe’s garage.

The Central Scrutinizer described what the world would look like 25 years later to a ‘T’. He’s like the music community’s version of nostradamus.

  3. You can possibly find a better album than Overnight Sensation. Just one amazing song after another.

  4. Sheik Yerbouti….Zappa at his irreverent disco spoofing best..broken hearts 4 assholes, dancin fool, bobby brown, yo mama, baby snakes..all live zappa classics memorized word for word….bozzio, belew, mars, ohearn and brock epitomize live zappa in the 70’s…plus you gotta love that album title…

  5. I don’t have a favorite Zappa album. I have never heard one all the way through.
That being said, I would love the DVD to give me more of a taste of his music.

  6. Burnt Weenie Sandwich
Little House I Used to Live in – 18 minutes of pure extasy. Don’t know the proper name for those wonderful pitch/tempo changes, but they still take my breath away. Need I say more?

  7. Burnt Weenie Sandwich changed my life. I heard/bought this record Autumn 1970 when I was 15 years old. I saw the Mothers live (together with my brother) in December that year. It was my first pop concert. And I have been a fan ever since. Music is the best !

  8. Make a Jazz Noise Here
    A concert that never was
    Pure Musical Bliss
    —-
    O.C. Lumber Truck
    Guitar Solo in five/four
    Beautiful stuff, that!

    “Franku” – FZ related haiku.

  9. Make A Jazz Noise Here – recorded during FZ’s final tour in 1988. Two hours of sublime live music showcasing great songs from the entire FZ oeuvre with new big band arrangements, performed with style, skill and wit by a classic band.

  10. Cruisin’ With Ruben And The Jets.
Whether it is the 1968 Vinyl version with the original bass, drums, and “Stuff Up The Cracks” or the incredible vocal harmony clarity on the CD, Zappa’s tribute to Doo-Wop explores the possibilities of extending that musical form, with humor and reverence.

  11. You Can’t Do That On Stage Anymore Vol. 2 – The 1974 Helsinki concert, simply the best Zappa lineup ever with Frank playing an amazing guitar solo in Pygmy Twylyte. ARF!

  12. While not my first Zappa album, “Uncle Meat” made me sit up and really take notice at a crucial point in my own development. Zappa wasn’t just a geetar-playin’ comedian, he was a thinking-man’s composer! This realization made me dig deeper into all music –and thus life. Thank Zappa!

  13. Roxy And Elsewhere. The rare live album that delivers a true concert experience. The Be Bop Tango is a timeless classic.

  14. Tell you about one and only one favorite Zappa album. That’s an absurd request. How is it possible to choose from his entire catalogue only one album. That would be doing a great disservice to all the others. Let’s get serious folks!

  15. Give the DVDs back to Dweezil and tell him shove them up and down Gail’s ass until she can’t come anymore.

  16. Best Zappa album…let’s see…

I’m gonna go with Filmore East 1971. WHat a show. Perfect mix of comedy/music. The group was in high form, and I’m sure the crowd was loving it. Plus it was the same day as the Lennon/Ono concert, as documented on “Sometime in New York City” or whatever that album is called.

And a quick shoutout to YCDTOS Vol. 2. Sickness!

  17. This is very hard to pick just one, but my choice is Make a Jazz Noise Here. Reasons being this thing sounds absolutely glorious played at maximum volume. The breadth of the song selection is just stunning. Amazing bass guitar that really makes the whole band jibe together beautifully. The solos rank up there among the best in the Zappa cannon. On top of that I just dig it.

  18. ‘God, it’s God, I see God’… I’m gonna go with We’re Only In It For the Money, because I can hardly begin to count the album’s layers of richness. Btw, the ‘God’ quote is spoken by Eric Clapton on the album. ‘You’re the other people too.’

  19. Joe’s Garage-definatly!
From Outside Now’s re-entrance to society after incarceration to the Packard Goose and Watermelon in Easter Hay…beautiful stuff!

  20. WAY back when, my cousin gave me his Roxy & Elsewhere LP. I loved it. But when I got my first car, I went out and bought One Size Fits All – on 8-Track! That’s the one that hooked me.
I listened to it so much, my younger brother – who isn’t a big Zappa fan – still knows every lyric. I think I’ll go listen to it now.

  21. My brother came home on leave from boot camp and he brought an album with him of a yellow cover with ugly guys in stunning dress wear. After listening to the first 30 seconds of it, I knew this was for me. That was 40 years ago.

  22. Its hard to pick just one favorite and my answer would probably vary from day to day. Today I’ll go with Roxy and Elsewhere. I’ve turned a few friends into Zappa fans with this album.

  23. On Burnt Weenie Sandwich the Mothers had effectively become Frank’s orchestra. His fine compositions (plus doo-wop fun) make this one hard to beat. (but Uncle Meat comes close…)

  24. It’s all One Big Note. And I love it, all of it. The whole thing. Project/Object, I say.

    AAAFNRAA!!!
