Phish Notes: Cactus Jams With STS9

Last night, Sound Tribe Sector 9 ditched their tour mates, Umphrey’s McGee, to play a two-set show at the Higher Ground in Burlington. During the second set former Tombstone Blues Band bass player Mike Gordon joined STS9 for what folks on The Lowdown are describing as a funky improv. In other Mike Gordon news, WNEW posted their interview with Cactus from the Mile High Festival in which he made it clear Phish will be getting back together “pretty soon.”

While we’re discussing Phish (for a change) you gotta check out this really cool feature from Goal.com. Pat Walsh uses Phish lyrics to help describe the first half of the Major League Soccer season. Here’s one entry to give you a taste:

Incoming Rumors

Well I’m convinced the whole day long

That all I learn is always wrong

— Character Zero

This summer the big names bandied about for possible big names coming to MLS were a pair of Barcelona aces, Ronaldinho and Deco. Why fans continue to believe superstars under 30 would realistically leave Europe to come here makes no sense. But that doesn’t keep the message boards from being run amok at the slightest hint of transfer rumors. Rumors that are almost always wrong.

  1. Mike is always teasing us. I like how he hints around at the Phish reunion coming this fall. You have to really know Mike to understand how he manages his words.

One of the things I like about Mike is the fact that he knows that he is Mike Gordon. You know what I mean? Most musicians struggle with the fact that they are not who we think they are. Mike just let’s it roll in and doesn’t take for granted that he know that he is Mike. the only other musician I can think of that was like this was Elvis but we all know that Elvis let it get to his head where as Mike just kicks back and says “look at me…I’m Mike”. I don’t think most people understand the importance of the guy understanding that he knows what it is that he is supposed to know even though he knows that most people don’t even realized that they can attain the fact that they really do know what it is that they are knowing. Even the ones who don’t know that they are supposed to can have moments of clarity about themselves. Most of the time the moments come when they are reminded to think about them in a past tense setting while focussing on a future project. That is where most people loose themselves and end up chasing something that is not themselves or anyone else’s for that matter.

Good Luck Mike. We’re all counting on you
