Nearly Peakin’: The Beacon Theatre’s Facelift

Earlier this year, it was announced that the historic Beacon Theatre, which has played host to an astounding 180 Allman Brothers shows, would be closing its doors in order to undergo a much needed renovation, courtesy of Cablevision who had inked a 20-year deal to lease the venue back in November 2006. While rumors have swirled as to just what James Dolan and Co. had up their sleeves for the now estimated $15 million project, the New York Times treated us to some insight yesterday into the history of the venue and the status of the six month project – which has been equal parts restoration and historical dig.

According to the Times, the notorious (well in these parts) Dolan is actually spending five million dollars more on the restoration than the contract required – which started last month and looks to wrap on January 31 for a February grand re-opening. In addition to that hefty sum, Dolan is also kicking in an additional $1 million on a new air conditioning system, which is a relief for a place whose walls practically dripped with sweat during any sold out, smoked filled show.
