HT Giveaway: Mike Gordon Band Live CDs

Just before Phish reunited after their second extended break, Mike Gordon spent the summer making quite a statement. Thanks to The Green Sparrow – one of the best albums ever released by a member of Phish – and an extremely well received Summer Tour with his fabulous quintet, we know that Cactus is playing, writing and improvising better than ever before.

  1. Train Song. We typically think of Mike songs as huge and funky, and somehow this song is just that while still being a short acoustic track – go listen again, it shows Mike’s brilliance and precision as a songwriter. Perfect song to listen to during a quiet drive late at night.

  2. My favorite Mike song is easily Weigh. What other song so perfectly displays Mike’s demented and off kilter sense of humor (one of the things that got me into Phish in the first place)? Maybe it’s the sheer absurdity and disturbing nature of the lyrics, maybe it’s just the great guitar riff, maybe it’s the frank sinatra interlude—maybe it’s a combo of all three. All I know is that this is one of those songs that personifies Mike and Phish.

  3. (Not trying to double submit, I just wanted to point out that Train Song was never played post-hiatus. When they come back again I hope that they don’t overlook the quieter tunes that either weren’t played or rarely played like this, Billy Breathes, Sleep, etc.)

  4. “Contact”

Because every time I make it to my abode, I feel like Mike was my co-pilot.

Thanks for the many mental and physical journeys pal!

    More to come…

  5. Couchlady. The bass solos are simply majestic. They are clear, concise, well worked. Everything from the percussion to the guitar riff is just golden. Enough said…stop reading this and go listen to it!

  6. I love Mike’s song. As far as I know, this was the only song Gordon had when he joined phish, so it was refered to as Mike’s song. And what’s not to like about a song that usually brings a weekapaug along with it?

  7. Weekly Time (from the Billy Breathes sessions). Great mellow song with a really tight bass to compliment the rest of the band. Not to mention Mike’s vocals are perfect.

  8. A man in Reno explained that there’s a musician named “Mike” who, he said, sleeps standing up in cedar closets in order to emit an unusual groove-breath which is recorded and transcribed into notation. I didn’t believe him until he played the song “Outside Out”. It was fairly convincing.

  9. My favorite track (from his new cd) is The Green Sparrow. Mainly for the little ‘frog’ sound in the first couple lines. It cracks me up every time. Mike’s cd was the perfect way to bring the summer to a close. Sounds great in the car with the sun beating down on you and the windows open.

  10. my favortie cactus tune is easily simple. great song with such a catchy fun guitar riff. i love the original bluegrass demo also. simple can be segued into many songs and can also come out of many jams. you never really know when a simple might arrive. weve got it simple coz weve got a band.

  11. contact. why? it’s not the headlights in the front, your tailpipe, or the skylight above you. it’s the way you cling to the road when the wind tries to shove you. i’d never go driving away and come back home without you.
and the real reason… (queue swaying hands –> EUPHORIA!!)

  12. The Teacher from Inside In with great lyrics about Zen guitar playing, sort of:

“I never could have seen or heard the trouble I was in
Or what the problem was about until I turned it inside out
Now I do the best at things I’ll never understand
Now I play guitar without a movement in my hand”

  13. the collins missile – the visuals this song created in my head were high hilarity. mike seems like the ultimate in passivism so the idea of him, and his nose, rolling out a mail order rocket with the intent to blast the face reddener is a hoot. Catus ganactus!

  14. My favorite Mike song is “Beltless Buckler” because, like Mike, it is an inherent contradiction. I have a great memory of seeing GRAB at Great Woods and flipping when they played an instrumental version of this song while the vast majority of people looked at me like I was an idiot.

  15. Favorite song would have to be Short Circuit, only played a few times on the short-lived 03 tour (although credited on some setlists to Mike, Scott Murawski and Joe Linitz). This song is a total psychotronic ear orgy. A unique vehicle for bizarre expression incorporating a random intensity designed to introduce our conscious minds to new subconscious depths. Only Dr. Suess could write a better song!

    Don

  16. Mike Gordon moves people. Clever and adventurous bass lines…unique sense of rhyme and reason…his songs are the most inspirational and danceable in the universe. Picking one is near impossible, but if forced at cap-gun point – Mound…typical Mike lyrics with some of the best music he’s ever written.

  17. Mikes Song is easily my favorite Gordo tune. While it lacks the usual oddball melody and lyrics that are associated with Mikes writing it is a jam monster delving through peaks and valleys that often times leave you befudled. Power, grace and texture is how would describe the sound of a good Mikes Song.

  18. Mike’s Song was one of my first favorites. I would seek out any tapes I could find that had this tune on it. Me no want no nice guys? Yes please.

  19. Mike Gordon is a rare soul with a well-traveled spirit that brings a unique viewpoint to most of his songs. The song I think best portrays this visionary artist is Andelman’s Yard from his new album. From it’s amazing basslines to it’s fun and interesting lyrics…this is the Gordo song that does it for me.

  20. “Voices” off of The Green Sparrow cause he recorded the intro/outro riff on his voice mail so that he wouldn’t forget it and then decided to use that voice mail on the actual recording! Come on – that’s shit right there!

  21. I’m going to go with Train Song. It is certainly not the best song he’s ever writen or the most explosive or the quirkiest. But it is the only one he’s written that immediately takes me back to a wonderful part of my life – my week of seeing Phish in Europe. I traveled from Amsterdam to Copenhagen to Prague and back to Amsterdam, all by train. Phish bookended my five shows with Train Song, playing it on 6/30/98 in Copenhagen and then again on 7/6/98 in Prague, the only two times the song was played that tour. Train Song always brings me back to my days in Europe and I’m grateful to Gordon for writing a tune that very simply accomplishes this for me. “So we stayed on the train admiring the time as the lights of the city drew near. We drank a little wine.”

  22. Beltless Buckler. Easily. Makes me Unbuckle. My Belt. My Belt Around My Head. Once I Do That, the Fat Comes Out. The Fat For the Cat.

  23. I’m going to go with Andelman’s Yard. It’s a great new offering from Cactus, with a tremendous opening and a great jam. It features both intricacy and openness, which gives the tune some real character. It also makes me think of Mike burrowing, which I think would be an activity that he would enjoy.

  24. I have a 2 way tie between “The Grid” and “Clone”…both are really stellar songs – and I think some of Mike’s best writing…in fact – lets go ahead and say “The Grid”

  25. I’d like to hear my options, so I can weigh them, what do ya say?
Five pounds, six pounds, seven pounds
Why weigh on a sunny day?
So much to do, so why, why weigh?
On a sunny day, why wei-gh-hey?

  26. Voices. It to me seems like an audible coming of age story where we get to experience mike’s growth and see the actualization of this new found knowledge and freedom.
It’s Mike standing fully on his own and enjoying it.

  27. Soulfood Man is a perfect Mike song. I loved jamming it in the parking lot after Phish shows in 03 and I’ll never forget the girl that walked by as my buddies and I were dancing like dorks who said “You guys are WEIRD!” She had no clue.

  28. “Radar Blip” is by far my favorite piece of work from Mike Gordon. The groovy horns and funk-infused bass lines have echoed in my brain all summer long. The song makes me happy and I have even played it as my girlfriend is riding me, reverse cowgirl… no sh*t.

  29. Without a doubt, the funky groove and twangy guitar make “Soulfood Man” my favorite Cactus song. The little tour he played a few years ago backing this song’s album was great fun, and reminded some of us that side-projects can not only be creative but also more than a simple distraction from the main event. Oh, and the video for the song (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxWdpWzHixA) just makes it that much more MIKE.

  30. Another Door. Mike’s moral advice in times of change. Another lock to pick, or maybe just ram it on through. Sneaky and deliberate or belligerent and forceful. Nothing else seems like it did before, you’ve made it through another door. Change is always positive when viewed this way. Future melodic jam vehicle.

  31. My favorite Mike Gordon song hands down would have to be “Scent of a Mule”. Aside from his excellent vocals, deep, mystical lyrics and … every single live performance of this song was so much fun! The suspense before he launches back in with the “Hop Hop Hoo..”, god I miss that

  32. now not officially written by just Mike, but by Phish and Marshall, so seems like it is a Mike song by inclusion. and he sings the song, too, so seems like fair game. anyway the song is, ‘Meat’. Not only did his Green Sparrow performances of this song blow me away and rekindle my interest in this song (which is often overlooked), but I’m picking this song due to the simple fact that he is vegan (or ‘cheatin” as it were). compelling irony…

  33. Mike’s Song, hands down, no question. The opening notes herald forthcoming greatness, whether it’s in your face rock, funked out groove, or shapeless improv. Those 5 opening notes lock in the crowd like no other and can reign in any wayward set. And come on now, white strobes, smoke machines, and trampolines coupled w such wickedness? Forget it. Only a handful of other Phish songs compare w that energy. Mike’s Song can go big, well beyond the scope of just a ‘song’, and that’s why I go to see Phish in the first place.

  34. I think Mike’s work on the “Green Sparrow” shows how far his song writing has progressed. His latest collection of tunes are complete thoughts. Andelmans Yard is by far the best song IMO that Mike has created and the best solo release from any Phish member. Kudo’s Mike from the lyrics to every last note of Andelman’s it is a showcase that you are on top of your game.

  35. Dig Furthur Down is my favorite new tune from Mike’s latest solo effort. You have got to love the musical flow of the Green Sparrow and coincidentally I have been listening to it for most of this week driving to and from work. “Dig” has a very similar intro The Wedge…and I can see Phish fans mixing up the two once the PH returns and hopefully some of Mike’s solo efforts get some regular work in the rotation. Andelman’s Yard is a very close second.

Thanks Mike for taking over a year to assemble this very fine music effort and band ensemble.

Also, Big Kudos Gordo for the Takin it to the Streets Bustout at the fillmore in Philly. Really hit the spot !

    Papa says Yes

  36. Couch Lady. I love how that song just announces itself about halfway through Inside In. “She sat on her favorite couch, outside on the leaves and rocks.” And my favorite “She went to the moon at negative speed, and came back a little girl.” If you enjoyed that lyric, you enjoyed the movie.

  37. It’s got to be Destiny Unbound. Nothing like coming in from the freezing cold on 2/28/03 and being greeted by one of the all-time greatest Trey shred sessions on Birds of a Feather, only to be followed by the most memorable of all bustouts (12 years between live versions of this gem) Great whimsical story told by Mike, “There isn’t even any road, our destiny was bound, we were the ones for us, and now were in the ground” Deep bass grooves…cool ass tune!

  38. Old Home Place!

I lived in Western Virginia neer Charlottesville. The story is about a man that leaves the farm and moves into town. I left the town and moved to the country. It reminds me when I went back to my town to see what changed. I found friends falling off, so I feel it!

  39. Bone Delay. It is so different from anything we’ve heard from anyone from Phish. Perfectly produced, every sound is perfectly placed. Love it when that banjo kicks in. And it is just so damn funky! Best Phish side-project recording.

  40. Untitled Keyboard Solo from “Bittersweet Motel”

Gordon’s defining moments often come from his personality, rather than his bass. This particular clip–from when he was feeling like “half a rock star”–is a microsm of quirky-ness and creativity. It’s what makes Gordon, well, Gordon.

  41. My favorite new Mike song is Traveled Too Far. Great minor key verses, then a great upward build with the prechorus, and finally an incredibly catchy chorus that just makes you want to shout it out. I remember seeing this song performed in Chicago and it was a blast!

  42. the only mike show I caught was the variety show in chicago and I got to say my nipples got stiff and the hair on my balls stood up. Super funky improv all night long with adleman’s yard and the choice covers made my night. The variety show acts were fun too, but it was the power of mikes playing that gave the night weight.

  43. i like the song “Voices”. it legitimizes the little people who keep me company while everyone else is making sense.

  44. I think by far, the way “Take Me Out” bookends Inside In providing the perfect introduction and farewell from a wonderful CD is my favorite song Mike has written in his solo endeavors. The laid-back atmosphere it provides really allows the listner an opportunity to forget time and space, while focusing on “THE CHILL”!!!

  45. My favorite Mike Gordon song is Poor Heart. Poor Heart shows Mike’s unique song writing and Phish’s ability to play any song any genre and play it well. Always loved when it was played live with bluegrass guests (McCoury band members, Flecktones, Gordon Stone). Also once someone stole my bike.

  46. I thoroughly enjoy “Andelmans’ Yard” off his solo album, “The Green Sparrow.” The musical feel of it reflects the influence Max Creek had on him. By just listening to it, I can imagine myself at a Max Creek show. Good job, Cactus! : )

  47. I think I might go with Clone because I think I will live vicariously through my own. Thanks. It makes me chuckle.

  48. My favorite song is “Couch Lady”. I love the way this song begins and ends with dissonance but in between features a gorgeous melody about an old woman who travels to the moon at “negative speed” and becomes an expert guitar player, learning the instrument in “seven minutes flat”!!! Awesome song and lyrics.

  49. “The Collins Missile” It showcases the free-form, whimsical lyrics Mike is know for, and it has an eclectic musical style with both interesting rhythms and subtles changes. Of course, it also contains Mike’s melodic and original basslines. Thanks for reading.

  50. “Beltless Buckle” is the definitive Gordo tune to me. A driving bass line, echoing and haunting guitar work, and cryptic, mysterious lyrics that seem to make little sense on the surface… but fit perfectly with Cactus’ baritone voice and intellectual inflection.

“He liked to dance with no song…”

  51. Traveled Too Far was fantastic when I saw Mike here in Seattle. Great song…one I would love Phish to tear apart! Hampton, baby!

  52. Exit Wound off the Inside In album is probably my favorite Mike Gordon song. It is a song that displays his voice and bass perfectly.I like how he plays with the echo of the bass and his voice is almost another instrument.

  53. I’ve really loved Access Me. The bass groove & the melody are fantastic, as well as all the eerie guitar and keyboard effects. Plus it even sounded great acoustic when he & Trey played it.

  54. Out of all songs I’ve heard that Mike has written, I’d have to say Andelman’s Yard is my favorite (yes, this includes all Phish songs he’s written.) I find myself listening to it allll the time nowadays. Love it. When I listen to it, it’s like I’m swirling in space.

  55. I choose Mike’s song. It’s named after Mike, because it’s totally deep and completely sick in the pocket as the man himself is.

  56. Banks of the Deep End. What a tribute to Allen Woody. How does one bass player honor another?
    you couldn’t hire twenty-five men
to do what the man could do
just the sound of his walking
could split the whole damn town in two

  57. Andelman’s Yard. Not just because it is a good song but because it provides a perfect glimpse into his mind and how he links some of his tunes to his dreams.

  58. “Morphing Again”

    M orphing Again
    I nto
    K aleidoscopic
    E uphoria

    G liding
    O n
    R ain
    D roplets
    O f
    N ostalgia

  59. My favorite Mike Gordon song hands down is “Another Door”. I love the lyrics and when I saw him live he played it as the opener and got the place going nuts! No matter how I am feeling, I always come back to “Another Door” to cheer me up.

  60. My favorite song from the collection of Cactus’ songs is “With,” the last track on Clone. It has humorous lyrics, the music is catchy, and it makes me feel all warm and gooey, both inside and out. “Gatekeeper” and “Couch Lady” receive honorable mentions…

  61. being a couch-potato lady, couch lady is my favorite mike song. it makes me get up off the couch and do a jig. great tune, great lyrics. it makes me forget that trey is my favorite.

“Some folks aren’t good enough to be humble
The best things are the ones on which you stumble”

  62. When it comes to Cactus I would have to say he lays it down so permanently pressed and gently in my favorite song right now Steel Bones. Although instrumental, if you listen to this track enough times you can hear voices of timelessness and a resonance that is methodically nostalcherated.

  63. Beltless Buckler. It’s the song my wife and I selected to be “our song” at our wedding in Stowe, VT on 9/5/04. From the opening groove to the whimsical lyrics, this one still captivates us every time: we immediately drop what we’re doing, embrance, and dance together. Gordo rules.

  64. Andelmans’ Yard!
Because it makes me think of Eddie Andelman (Boston sports talk show guy) digging holes in hes back yard and filling them with hot dogs. See…Eddie hold’s the annual “hot dog safari” here in Boston and this year Im going to dig a maze of tunnels just to get there. Eddie Andelman also has a dish named after him at the Kowloon Chinese food restaurant. mmmmmm Andelman

  65. “Invisible” (Mike Gordon/Joe Linitz) from Leo Kottke and Mike Gordon’s Sixty Six Steps.

This song will always be timeless and stand out as one of Gordon’s most beautiful tracks. It is Gordon’s most personal and heartfelt song about a relationship and its various ingredients: attraction, loss, confusion, longing and love. There’s even a bit of humor that makes Gordon such a unique songwriter. “Invisible” is a stepping stone for the more personal songs on Green Sparrow. Never have we heard Gordon get this personal yet keep the track open-ended so that anyone can relate to it. This song captures why the Sixty Six Steps LP is such a beautiful album overall; layered textures, varied instrumentation and gorgeous harmonies. The first time I heard this album and it closed with “Invisible”, the song left me excited for future Gordon songs and how he would continue as a song writer. It felt different and it felt really good. It left me wanting more yet kept me completely fulfilled forever.

  66. “Invisible”

Gordon at his most personal and beautiful, with layered textures, varied instrumentation and gorgeous harmonies. A song about love’s various ingredients: attraction, loss, confusion, and longing. There’s even humor that makes Gordon such a unique songwriter. “Invisible” is a stepping stone for the more personal songs on Green Sparrow.

  67. My favorite Mike song is Catapult, because it refuses to even be attached to a specific piece of music and that is the essence of Mike. Finding new grooves and tweaking old ones to make them new. Most other tunes have standardized segue ways, but you never knew when Catapult was coming.

  68. My favorite “Mike Song” is Ya Mar.I normally would say “Mike’s Song” but I really love Ya Mar(especially from 11/27/98,very fun)and I think Mike loves it too. I’m not positive but I want to say it is a “Mustangs” song??At any rate Mike heard it on vacation with his parents when he was just a little Cactus, and he said that he liked how the bass in the song vibrated. Ya Mar just has a nice bass sound to it, and I like it very much.Plus my father has an Austin Healy sports car(like and MG)..and yes, “He keeps it VERY clean!”

  69. Pretend is the best Mike Gordon song written. At first I thought is was a really weird love song, which sounded strange coming from Mike. But then the more I listened to it and the lyrics took hold, I realized it was a REALLY weird love song. I’ve always loved the glimpses into Mike’s brain (I miss Mike’s Corner and Mike replies from the Schvice), and Pretend takes you deep into the demented mind of Mike. An entire song written about someone when they’ve never even met. His line “I think I’m falling in like with you…” – just awesome. I can just see Mike sitting there looking at this woman and having all these thoughts about what their life would be like together, only she has no idea about any of it. I just love the very unique Mike twist on a love song as only he could write it.

  70. I would have to pick…FOAM.  I remember seeing Gordo and the Duo preform this at the Georgia Theater in Athens, GA. They put on an amazing hour long rendition of this song. It blew me away, but I would have to say that just seeing Mike perform provides great excitement for me. He is so engaged in his music and always doing the bobble-head. Keep on keeping on Mike!

  71. “Scent of a Mule” is my favorite Mike Gordon song. It has everything – character development, action, suspense, and, ultimately, redemption. The story the song tells is a perfect example of the unique Gordon-esque balance between the bizarre and the beautiful. Laser beam bluegrass at its finest.

  72. Andelman’s Yard is swimming with dream inspired and dream inducing lyrics that are delivered with perfect cadence and timing. It reminds me of my childhood and everyday daydreaming fantasies that drive the imagination. The complex layered musical textures provide a delightfully rhythmic backdrop as Gordon paints pictures with his words.

  73. People are trying to hard. It is without a iota of doubt “Mike’s Song”-just listen to Mike scream it’s “his song” at Roseland 92′, or the when he which he begins “bringing the dude” at Albany 97, or destroys the thunderous post-vocal portion from any version from any version from any era of Phish.

  74. “Weekly Time” I know its new but i love the hell out of this song. ” I feel my brain talking, but i hear my mouth gettin’ in the way.” It’s Just classic Mike writing style layered with that honkey tonk goodness that is Ramble Dove. Mike’s voice is best when he is singing bluegrass in my opinion, so i was happy to see him try it out with his new band.

  75. Adleman’s Yard – that little jam and groove they get going in the middle of the song just picks me up off the ground and floats me underneath where I feel as though I am burrowing around in the tunnels Mike sings about. The song is like audio prozac for me; I am instantly happy a beebopping around as I hum it in my head.

  76. Mike’s song. this is one of the songs that when played could always forcast an emotional wave of energy. i like all of his songs, but mike’s song had this funk to it that made it well rounded (in addition to its relatively complex composed sections). for me, mike’s song opens the door to eternity.

  77. Aa laa kwuizeene!!! Squeezhan!?!?! Was that salmon roe?…..I thought so. What do you think Chef Gordon will do next? Hopefully play some more shows with Leo K (nudge nudge wink wink)

  78. My favorite is Mound. It’s whimsical, funny and yet some how serious. I always love the playing with words for example “And at last till he realized he circled back around, round a back circle, round a back realized”. Just so much fun to hear the song, sing and dance to the song.

  79. My All time Favorite Mike Gordon Song is “FIKUS”! Not only is the music dark and dreamy with a tribal beat for a backbone, but the lyrics are just as dark and dream inspiring. Lyrics like “waterfalls and yellow snakes” “hydrofoils” and “kitchen cakes and cedar shakes” just place intense mental imagery into one’s wide open mind!

Cheers on the new band Mike, and CHEERS ON THE OLD ONE TOO! 🙂

see you at hampton in march…Time for the MEATSTICK!

  80. My favorite Mike Gordon song is Traveled Too Far from his new album. It really is a wonderful representation of how much Mike Gordon has evolved as a songwriter. His lyric clearly express his vision still retaining the quirkiness that is Mike Gordon. I think the benfit of this break will be evident in any future phish outing.

  81. Obviously, it is difficult to choose one favorite song from Mike’s glorious catalog. When it comes down to it, I usually go with “Mound”. For this contest, I have to go with the song “Fuck Your Face”. It’s extremely raw and aggressive though humorous, which is such a crucial part to the greatest of Mike’s work. The lyrics do a beautiful job of creating vivid images, much like his entries in Mike’s Corner, though the words are more literal here as opposed to some abstract tangents.

I just noticed there is a limit on words so used so I’ll stop here.

  82. My fav song is Couch Lady. It reminds me of my mom. She was diagnosed with advanced ovarian cancer in early 2002, and was very ill by fall of 2003. I saw Mike at Toad’s Place in New Haven that fall, and he played that song. The song is about a woman who stayed on her couch but was able to ‘travel’…my mom was a very active woman who, by that time, was spending most of her time on her couch but was also ‘traveling’ due to the meds she was on, if you know what I mean. My mom passed away within a few weeks of that show and I think about her when I hear that song and it makes me smile.

  83. Weigh. Hanging out with some kids and they played what they thought was the worst song ever. I asked for the cd, Rift. They gave it to me. Opened the jacket and said the guy with the cool sneakers must be the bassplayer. My life was never the same again.

  84. Fikus, although picking a favorite Mike tune is like asking a mother to pick her favorite child. Mike’s voice can haunt and soothe at the same time, and FIkus is the epitome of those 2 characteristics.

  85. Access Me is my favorite Mike song. Whenever I play the Undermind Album I always start with it and skip back and play it again and again. It always makes me feel good, I just love the beat and the lyrics. It’s a simple, short song that I really enjoy and the words really mean a lot to me.

  86. Clone – It just is. No discussion necessary, much in the same way no one needs to discuss whether the sun rose today. Please do not attempt to deny this.

  87. Traveled Too Far it was the song i listened to over and over to on the new ablum and when i heared him in madison he nailed it and had a killer jam
