Friday Mix Tape: The SXSW Edition

Typically, by now I’ve given up caring about the music schmooze fest going on next week known as SXSW, but this year is different. I’ve somehow managed to convince my day job that they needed to send me down to Austin to partake in the massive Texas orgy of booze, BBQ and bands. With a mind-numbing number of bands playing over the course of the fest, it’s a daunting task making heads or tails of what to see. Here’s songs from six bands that I intend to check out. Enjoy and have a great weekend all.

We kick things off with Torture from garage rock revivalist and suposed must see King Khan & The Shrines from their Supreme Genius of… album. From there, we’ve got a band that NPR’s All Songs Considered SXSW preview turned me on to Sgt. Dunbar & The Hobo Banned with A March Through Charles Mingus’ Garbage. We continue on with When I Light Your Dark from Fleet Foxes drummer J. Tillman off his first solo album Cancer And Delirium. Next up is one from Rhode Island’s own The Low Anthem with Charlie Darwin off their latest release Oh My God Charlie Darwin. Then, we’ve got some strummy Americana courtesy of Good Old War with Coney Island that comes off the band’s Only Way to Be Alone. Finally, we close things out with the folk-rock stylings of Sub Pop’s Vetiver with Through The Front Door, off their recently released Tight Knit.

  1. I got turned on to J Tillman long before Foxes album dropped from G vs. B blog. Cancer and Delirium is one of the best mellow singer/songerwriter albums I have heard in a long time. I listened to the whole album on the way back from Hampton, one sad long flight back to LA. Good shout HT.

  2. It is a great festival and lots to see and do that includes more than just the music. This will be my first time doing SxSW while being a resident of Austin.
