Last Week’s Sauce: March 22nd – 28th

Artist & Title: Charlie Hunter – Astronaut Love Triangle
Date & Venue: 2009-03-28 – The Asylum, Portland ME
Taper & Show Download: SmokinJoe
Naming instrumental songs has got to be a lot of fun. Sure, maybe your title will have something to do with the vibe of the piece, maybe it won’t, and you’re certainly not hampered by all those silly lyrics. Plus you get to cool shit like name your song after Lisa Nowak. The explanation on the website for the album Baboon Strength simply reads, “You know the news story”. Hunter has a few more dates with drummer Eric Kalb in Virginia and Pennsylvania, before switching to a new drummer later in the month.

Artist & Title: Gomez – If I Ask You Nicely
Date & Venue: 2009-03-23 – The Orange Peel, Asheville NC

These guys have a new disc and it came out yesterday. The track I have selected is of course on it and the album is called A New Tide. Gomez has three US dates left on their tour (including a sold-out Music Hall of Williamsburg) before heading back overseas for their UK spring tour.

Artist & Title: Jeff Tweedy – Heavy Metal Drummer
Date & Venue: 2009-03-26 – Higher Ground, South Burlington VT
Taper & Show Download: Mark Daly
It was a big week for Jeff Tweedy, well…you know, in terms of Hidden Track-related stuff. We noticed when he slipped the word Phish into one of his songs. Also, I was compelled to write up a review filled with many of the quirky things he said the night. The show I saw (Northampton) was great and we’ve got a track for you (yes the one with the namedrop), from the night before up in Vermont. Unfortunately for you at this point, the Tweedy solo gigs are done. But you can catch Wilco as soon as April 14th if you live anywhere near Milwaukee.

Artist & Title: Keller Williams – Rush Limbaugh
Date & Venue: 2009-03-22 – Port City Music Hall, Portland ME
Taper & Show Download: corey the groundhog
This song title caught my eye as I was browsing the Live Music Archive putting together this piece. Keller sure fits in a lot of words into this one, and the tune is pretty hilarious. The song starts off by pointing out that Rush Limbaugh has the right to say all the crazy shit that he says. But so does Keller Williams and the refrain “Rush Limbaugh, you’re an asshole, you big ‘ol douchebag you I hope you fail” is probably going to get stuck in your head. Plenty of chances to see Keller, he’s scheduled through August!

UM provides an extended take on an increasingly rare instrumental from their repertoire titled Smell The Mitten. UM has the last of their five pay-per-view shows via iClips tonight in Buffalo. Then it’s off to: Delaware, Pennsylvania, Baltimore, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Northampton, Boston and finally two nights in New York City. There’s one day off in there too.

Artist & Title: The Waybacks – Conjugal Visit
Date & Venue: 2009-03-26 – Little Fox Theatre, Redwood City CA
Taper & Show Download: Will_S
Last but not least (C’mon it’s alphabetical) is The Waybacks from San Francisco. I’ve liked this band ever since I first saw them at Merlefest in 2003. They’ve got a packed touring schedule, so be sure to see if they’re coming to your area as I think they are the best touring band in their genre.
