Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Get Rev’d Up

With the plethora of contemporary acts descending upon the various tents and stages throughout the festival grounds this weekend at Bonnaroo 2009, it may be easy to overlook the fact that there is some genuine music royalty on the bill too – including Allen Toussaint, Merle Haggard and King Sunny Ade. Among these  legends, the one act I’d have circled and starred repeatedly on my schedule would be the Reverend himself – Al Green.

Green, who is best known for his 1970s output that includes the seminal albums I’m Still in Love With You and Let’s Stay Together, is a powerhouse live performer, even at age 63. Let’s head back to the prime of his career for this six-plus minute, funkified performance he did for Soul Train of his signature tune Take Me To The River…

The Rev. hits the What Stage tonight at 6 PM, let’s keep our fingers cross that he invites David Byrne by to duet on it. We can dream can’t we?
