Preview: Matisyahu / Umphrey’s Tour

Over the past few years, HT favorites Umphrey’s McGee have padded their summer schedule with co-bills featuring the likes of the Disco Biscuits and STS9. This year, the prog-jammers are teaming up with Hasidic reggae rapper Matisyahu for a quick jaunt through the northeast that kicks off tomorrow.

The two acts have crossed paths in the past and Umphrey’s most recent podcast – creatively titled Mantisyahu – features Matis performing Close Your Eyes backed with the Chicago-based sextet along with members of the band discussing this run of shows. For those who haven’t seen Matisyahu lately, he jettisoned his longtime backing band in favor of Brooklyn’s Dub Trio. Matisyahu’s latest album, Light, hits stores on August 25, so you can expect plenty of new stuff from the ensemble.

The Matis/UM tour begins tomorrow night at the Bank of America Pavilion in Boston before heading down to Philadelphia’s Electric Factory on Wednesday night. On Thursday, the bands head to New York City for an early-starting concert at Central Park’s SummerStage. Tickets still remain for each of the concerts. Matis opens the show in Boston while Umphrey’s kicks things off in both NYC and Philadelphia. Are you hitting any of these shows?
