Pullin’ ‘Tubes: Celebration Time

Lost somewhere between the mud of Woodstock and the tragedy of Altamont, came the much more intimate Big Sur Folk Festival – which took place in mid-September of that mythic year. The ’69 version of the fest, which ran annually from ’64 through ’71, attracted a powerhouse line up that featured the likes of Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, John Sebastian, country rockers The Flying Burrito Brothers  and the soon-to-be-legendary Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young at an idyllically serene mountaintop setting in Big Sur, CA where bands played to the stunning backdrop of the Pacific Ocean.

Captured on film for the long out of print documentary Celebration At Big Sur, the movie features fantastic performances that include Joan Baez’s take on I Shall Be Released, Joni Mitchell teaching the audience the chorus to her relatively new tune Woodstock and all-star version of the hippie anthem Get Together that featured Mitchell backed by CS&N and John Sebastian.

The most memorable scene of the entire flick though is Stephen Stills’ face to face confrontation with an irate fan that’s sandwiched between a stellar version of Sea Of Madness from CSN&Y and Stills’ beautiful solo acoustic rendition of 4+20, check it out…
