Last Week’s Sauce: August 9th – 15th

Artist & Title: Harvey Danger – Flagpole Sittah
Date & Venue: 2009-08-15 Schuba’s Chicago, IL
Taper & Show Download: Brian Emerick

Listen to the banter at the end of the track, Sean Nelson (frontman of Harvey Danger) claims that this song sums up the ’90s…OK, maybe. He also says that they created Emo! I’m sure he was at least somewhat joking about both of these claims. Harvey Danger next plays Saturday at Largos in Los Angeles.

Artist & Title: John Cowan – Tuesday Afternoon > Going To California
Date & Venue: 2009-08-10 The Ark, Ann Arbor MI
Taper & Show Download: Z-Man

This is a fun little performance featuring covers of The Moody Blues and Led Zeppelin with just a little bit of The Beatles mixed in for good measure. John Cowan next plays Friday at the Targhee Bluegrass Festival.

Artist & Title: Pearl Jam – Got Some
Date & Venue: 2009-08-15 Wuhlheide Berlin, Germany
Taper & Show Download: sebi2704

Got Some is one of the newest additions to the always-expanding Pearl Jam repertoire. It’s a short rocker and the overall tone is that of choosing sides in the world of politics and who is, “On the rise” and who is “Falling down”. I think you can guess which side Vedder is on. Pearl Jam plays Friday night in Toronto.

Also, here’s a video Pearl Jam put out showing some scenes from the making of their upcoming album Backspacer, which Got Some will be on.

Artist & Title: Phish – BDTNL > Twenty Years Later
Date & Venue: 2009-08-16 SPAC, Saratoga Springs NY
Taper & Show Download: Andy Murray

To me, this 28+ minute segment that opened the second set in Saratoga this past weekend illustrates clearly that the Phish we all know and love is back in the driver’s seat. Backwards Down The Number Line, a happy unassuming little ditty, has asserted itself as an open-ended jam vehicle…plus, I’m a huge fan of the song Twenty Years Later, I just find it very haunting – especially the outro. Currently, the only dates on the books for Phish is Festival 8, but I bet we’ll see a fall tour announced in the next couple of weeks.
