Allmans Hope For Trouble No More After Inauspicious Start of Co-Bill Tour

When legendary axeman Dickey Betts got arrested before a 1993 H.O.R.D.E. show in Stowe, VT, the Allman Brothers Band asked ARU guitarist Jimmy Herring to sit in with them and he stepped up. After the Allmans fired Dickey Betts by fax in 2000 they asked Jimmy Herring to join them for a tour and he stepped up. The trend continued tonight in Charlotte, where Herring filled in for Warren Haynes, who had travel issues, as the Allmans kicked off the second leg of their co-bill tour with Widespread Panic at the Verizon Wireless Amphitheatre.

Warren’s absence wasn’t the only problem for the Brothers tonight. Gregg Allman suffered a pinched nerve that kept him from behind the boards leading him to play a Fender Stratocaster for most of the jam-filled set. Gov’t Mule’s Danny Louis filled in on keys throughout the set.

Meanwhile, the Widespread Panic set that closed the show was also filled with numerous guest appearances. Longtime collaborator John Keane joined the band for the first time in nearly two years to play pedal steel on This Part of Town and Ain’t Life Grand. Later in the set, Derek Trucks added another guitar to the mix for You Should Be Glad and Danny Louis added some extra keys to Fishwater. For the encore, another longtime collaborator, Bloodkin’s Daniel Hutchens, came out with Keane to help Panic tackle Bloodkin’s End of the Show. Let’s hope Warren arrives and Gregg feels better for tomorrow night’s show in Charlotte. Here’s the setlists…
