Rhino to Release Jerry Garcia Collection – Let It Rock and Road Trips Volume 3, Number 1

This has already been a stellar year for Grateful Dead and Jerry Garcia archival releases, but Rhino will up the ante with the next batch of releases set to drop on or around November 10. Jerry Garcia Collection, Vol. 2: Let It Rock will feature selections from the JGB shows at the legendary Keystone in Berkeley on November 17 and 18, 1975, while Road Trips Vol. 3, No. 1 contains the entire Grateful Dead show from December 28, 1979.

Let It Rock features the very first version of the Jerry Garcia Band, in which Captain Trips was joined by Rolling Stones’ co-conspirator Nicky Hopkins on keys, Elvis Presley’s drummer Ron Tutt and of course Jerry’s woobie – John Kahn on bass. The two-disc set begins with a 13-minute Let It Rock, a 19-minute version of Let’s Spend the Night Together by the Stones and Dead favorites Sugaree, They Love Each Other and Friend of the Devil.

The first installment of volume 3 of the Road Trips’ series should make both casual and hardcore Deadheads happy as it features the complete show from December 28, 1979. The Dead were used to playing New Year’s runs at the Winterland, so this was their first set of year-end shows across the bay at the Oakland Auditorium and their first holiday shows with new member Brent Mydland on keys. 12/28/79 features plenty of rockers and those pre-ordering will get the bonus disc which contains highlights from the 12/30/79 show including a masterful Scarlet > Fire sequence.

  1. The 1979 GD show was actually at the much smaller Oakland Auditorium (soon to be known as the Henry J Kaiser Arena), NOT the Oakland Coliseum Arena.
