Last Week’s Sauce: February 1st – 7th

Artist & Title: Jackie Greene – I Shot The Sheriff
Date & Venue: 2010-02-01 Fox Theater, Boulder CO
Taper & Show Download: patrick_h

I realize Jackie Greene shows up a lot in this column, but I keep finding new reasons to include him. Like this new cover (or at least a rare cover, I’ve never seen it on a setlist) just added to his repertoire. Jackie plays tonight at The Ark in Ann Arbor MI.

Short clip from a few days later, opening for Gov’t Mule:

Artist & Title: Perpetual Groove – 40 Roses
Date & Venue: 2010-02-06 Neighborhood Theatre, Charlotte NC
Taper & Show Download: joel at jamlivedotorg

If you haven’t listened to Perpetual Groove’s new album Heal, you are missing out. It really is a top-notch album, and this is one of the tracks from it. Also of note, guitarist Brock Butler sat in with Umphrey’s McGee last night for a cover of Paul Simon’s Graceland and a performance of an instrumental track off of Brock’s recent solo record Lately Here Though. PGroove plays tomorrow at Nashville’s Exit/Inn.

Artist & Title: Reid Genauer – Cool Water (?)
Date & Venue: 2010-02-04 Iron Horse Music Hall, Northampton MA
Taper & Show Download: Carl Daniel

“It depends if you’re an Umphrey’s McGee fan or not, if you are, then you probably don’t really like our shows very much.” Fuck You Reid! Umphrey’s McGee fan here and one of my favorite things in the world is to see you perform solo.

Anyway, there’s some great banter here that Reid had prepared to use on a non-attentive audience. Turns out the crowd in Northampton was very respectful but Reid tried the material out on them anyway. I was there the next night when he very effectively told the same story and directed it directly at a pack of girls to my right. Reid plays with his band Assembly Of Dust this Friday at Brooklyn Bowl and will next perform a solo show at the Stone Church in Newmarket NH on February 27th.

Artist & Title: Trey Anastasio – Mr. Completely
Date & Venue: 2010-02-08 Jefferson Theater, Charlottesville VA
Taper & Show Download: Craig Davis

Yesterday we made it as easy as possible for you to listen to the four new tunes Trey debuted live. Today, here is one of the old staples Mr. Completely, there’s some great start/stop action at the 8:30 mark. Trey and the band have today off and will roll into Philadelphia’s Electric Factory tomorrow for their third show of the tour.

And here’s some video from last night:

Artist & Title: Umphrey’s McGee – Wife Soup > JaJunk
Date & Venue: 2010-02-06 The Tabernacle, Atlanta GA
Taper & Show Download: Dennis Tyler

Umphrey’s McGee sold out The Tabernacle in Atlanta for the first time and they were really really psyched about it. Take note of the section of improv that connects this unfinished Wife Soup with the end of JaJunk. UM is off today but will hit Asheville, Charleston, Charlotte, and Baltimore in the next four days.
