Friday 4 the Foodies: Pretzels, Sandwiches, Meatballs, Mail Order, Bacon & Bourbon

Next up is The Meatball Shop.  Opened in mid February at 84 Stanton Street on The Lower East Side.  Grub Street did a review with a slideshow of the interior of the restaurant.   I haven’t been yet but friends have and all I have heard so far is raves.  One of the owners, Daniel Holzman was Co-Executive Chef of SPQR in San Francisco with Nate Appleman (who is now Chef of the soon to be opened Pulino’s Bar &  Pizzeria on the  southwest corner of Houston & Bowery).  Daniel Holzman’s partner, Michael Chernow ran Frank on Second Avenue for years so both owners come from impressive backgrounds.  You can read their bio’s here and find the menu here.

Ok, now that we have gotten the gluttony out of the way, let’s move onto something a little healthier.  Peter Meehan, co-author of The Momofuko Cookbook (with David Chang of course), former $25 and under writer for the NY Times and now writer of a great NY Times Magazine column called Grass Fed recently did a piece called The Peel Sessions in which he introduced us to a place called Friend’s Ranch in Ojai California.

According to the article…

“Friend’s offers all manner of fruit box combos. But the most charming option (and the best value) is called the Plain Jane: eight pounds of fruit unceremoniously piled into a USPS Flat Rate Priority Mail box. Each shipment is a surprise, an ever-changing mix of whatever is ripe in their orchards; the chaotic abundance of fresh citrus leaves that fill out the box, like nature’s own packing peanuts, always makes me imagine a guy walking through the orchards, picking a little bit of this and that and tucking it all into a box.”

We all know we should try to eat healthier.  I am seriously thinking about ordering a Plain Jane box myself.

Finally, in upcoming events, The Astor Center is hosting  The 2010 Bacon and Bourbon Expo on March 25th from 5-8 PM (Tickets are $25 per person).  This is their description of the event…

“Join us for this walk-around tasting of two great American pleasures! Sample premium American whiskies while tasting an array of tasty bacons, from artisanal producers including Nueske’s, RUB, and other surprise VIP’s from the world of smoked meats. Celebrated meat man Josh Ozersky will lead guided bacon tastings and demonstrations back in the Study (for when you need to take a break from all those delicious libations). Every guest will receive a complimentary rocks glass with which to sample the spirits, yours to keep!”

  1. Frank is a longtime neighborhood fave or my wife and I. I can’t see how it’d even be possible that a meatball sub made by those two would be anything but amazing.
