You couldn’t help but be surprised at the lack of guests over the first four nights of the Allman Brothers Band’s annual March Madness run as previous runs at the Beacon featured a slew of sit-ins at nearly every show. Tonight, for night number five, the guest spots came back in a big way with guitarists James “Blood” Ulmer and Eric Krasno as well as keyboardist Rob Barraco all joining the band at various points during the show.
Ulmer, who was the first electric guitarist in free jazz legend Ornette Coleman’s band, sat in on I Asked For Water (She Gave Me Gasoline) to open the second set. The second set also featured a That’s What Love Will Make You Do that saw Soulive Eric Krasno tear it up on guitar. Krasno returned for the encore along with DSO keyboardist Rob Barraco for a rollicking version of Southbound.
For tonight’s show Moogis debuted the “jam cam” which focused on ABB drummer and Moogis founder Butch Trucks. It was a virtual drum lesson of sorts. Trucks also continued a trend of stopping by the Moogis chat during setbreak and advised the site’s users that special guests were coming.
