Friday Mix Tape: Coachella Edition

The summer festival season receives its official kick-off today as the Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival gets under way in Indio, CA. The three-day fest features an eclectic mix of established and up and coming indie-bands, hip-hop acts and DJs spread across five stages and tents on the grounds of the Empire Polo Fields. With that in mind, this week’s Mix Tape features a number of bands we think you should check out if you’re headed out to the desert this year, or if you’ll just be watching it at home

We kick things off with Giving Up The Gun from Vampire Weekend’s sophomore effort Contra – Erza Koenig & Co. hit the Outdoor Theater on 9:55 PM tonight. Next up is Still Rockin from the Denver-based DJ Pretty Lights – who will get your ass shakin’ at the Sahara Tent with an hour long set starting around 7:50 PM. From there we continue the dance party theme with what should be the indie-rock anthem of the summer – Drunk Girls – the first single from LCD Soundsystem’s highly anticipated new album This Is Happening – they’ll hit the Coachella Stage at 9:05 PM this evening prior to headliner Jay-Z taking the stage.

From there, we’ve got HT faves Frightened Rabbit with Nothing Like You from their fantastically titled new album The Winter Of Mixed Drinks – who hit the Outdoor Theater at 2:45 PM on Saturday afternoon if they make it past the ash. Next up, is the San Francisco band GIRLS with Lust For Life from their debut Album, who bring their sunny Beach Boys influenced sound to the Gobi Tent at 3: 25 PM. We follow that up with former Blips act Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros with Javelin, the small hippie collective descends on the Outdoor Theater at 5:10 PM.

Finally, we head to Sunday’s lineup as we’ve got one from another former Blips band, Local Natives, with their cover of the Talking Heads’ Warning Sign from their debut Gorilla Manor – they’ll be at the Gobi Tent at 2:10 PM. From there, we’ve got the wild card of the weekend Sly & The Family Stone with their classic Dance To The Music. Sly is scheduled to play the Gobi Tent at 7:00 PM. We’ll keep our fingers crossed that he actually makes it and sticks around for more than a song or two. We close things out with Summer Babe (Winter Version) from the recently reunited Pavement, who will be at the Coachella Stage at 7:45 PM for what is sure to be one of the most buzzed about sets of the weekend.
