MMJ Springs To Life in Birmingham: Setlist and Audio From The Tour Opener

Longtime HT faves My Morning Jacket spent most of 2009 off the road and out of the studio, so we were extremely curious to see what they’d play upon their return to the stage last night in Birmingham, AL. The group’s tour opening show featured all of “the hits,” a new tune called Friends Again and a smattering of covers at the end of the show. Surprisingly, MMJ also tackled Losin’ Yo Head from Monsters of Folk’s self-titled debut record.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band is opening most shows on this two-week jaunt and joined the headliners towards the end of their set adding a taste of New Orleans to Evil Urges and Highly Suspicious as well as covers of Curtis Mayfield’s Move On Up, Ernie K-Doe’s Mother In Law and Al Johnson’s Carnival Time. Also of note was an extended, psychedelic-tinged intro to the One Big Holiday opener. Here’s a look at the setlist…

We’ve yet to come across too much in the way of video from last night’s show, but taper extraordinaire Taylor Caine has already uploaded his recording of the show to the Live Music Archive for your streaming and downloading pleasure. MMJ’s Spring Tour continues tonight in Nashville.
