Joker’s Wakarusa Report: Day One

Here’s the setlist:

Disco Biscuits, June 3, Main Stage Wakarusa 2010

Mirrors, The Bridge, Caterpillar > Spacebirdmatingcall > Cyclone > Waves, Rockafella > Little Shimmy In A Conga Line > I-Man

E: Feel Good, Inc

The secret to enjoying a Disco Biscuits show? Get close and find the people who want to dance. The crowd was very enthusiastic and for most of the the show there was a Phish-caliber glow stick war erupting.

After a relatively slow start to the set with Mirrors and new song The Bridge, Bisco kicked the dance party into gear with Caterpillar. Caterpillar had a sick start/stop jam before giving into Spacebird. I felt the real meat of the Bisco performance was in Spacebird>Cyclone>Waves. The series of songs with melodic, beautiful guitar riffs combined with the cyborg-like precision of Allen’s drumming whipped the crowd of new and old fans into a frenzy.

One of the side effects of post-wristbreak Barber is his willingness to put down the guitar and dance around the stage with the mic. He did this at Red Rocks during Portal For An Empty Head and gave a similar display to Wakarusa during Rockafella. “You’re always standin’ by my siiiideee eeee iiiiddddeee” he crooned. It was hilarious, kinda bad and kinda good all wrapped into one.

Bisco finished out a strong set with Little Shimmy > I-Man > Little Shimmy, mixing in some funky guitar and grooves that was a nice addition to a set so focused on the untz. It was not clear if the band was going to come back with an encore, but they surprised us all with the Gorillaz cover Feel Good Inc. Brownie must be rapping in the shower every day to this song because I thought he nailed the rap section.

Next, I saw about five minutes of the Pink Floyd laser show before heading over to Lotus. Lotus brought out their heavy guns all set long. Hammerstrike started us off and it was a sweaty, nasty, dirty dance party in a tent that felt like a sauna. Lotus absolutely destroyed the late night tent and it was the highlight of my evening. I wish I had the setlist for you but it was a Lotus Greatest Hits kind of set and I never stopped moving or sweating.

After Lotus ended I wondered back to my camp to collect myself. I felt great and was energized by the music. The festival has a great vibe and is easy to get around. Security is lax and people are having a great time.

At about 3AM we made our way over to the Interstellar Meltdown/Satellite stage for some early morning wooommmppp. The stage is tucked back in the woods, down a hill in a small bowl and despite the late hours the tent was busting at the seams. Many revelers enjoyed the fire dancers taking turns entertaining the crowd. I enjoyed Kraak and Smaak but it seemed like most were waiting for MiMosa to come on. We tried to class up the place a little bit and brought cold orange juice and champagne to share with the crowd as MiMosa kept us dancing till sunrise.

So far, I’m having a blast. It’s quite hot during the day, but if you can find some shade under one of the many trees around the perimeter of the the beautiful grounds, it’s not that bad. Looking forward to the Umphrey’s and STS9 sets tonight.
