Phish @ SPAC, Night One: Recap & Setlist

The Tweezer Reprise madness that Phish started on Friday night in Hartford by performing the caffeinated song twice to end the show continued last night at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center in Saratoga Springs, NY, where the band both opened and closed the show with Tweezer Reprise. Who would’ve thought an early curfew in Hershey would have such major implications on two gigs a week later?

Starting off with the high-energy Tweeprise and a rocket fueled version of Chalkdust whipped the crowd into a frenzy that didn’t really let down throughout the evening. Both the lawn and the pavilion were packed to the gills with one fan on top of the next dancing in unison. Once again, the quartet focused on older material in the first set, but did debut a new Page McConnell-written gem, Halfway to the Moon, in the middle of the second set. The tune sounds as if it could’ve been a Vida Blue outtake thanks to a funky edge and offers plenty of space for Phish to extend the song in the future with some tasty jams.

Other highlights include the jam out of the Rock and Roll second set opener and a marvelous Fluffhead, Bathtub Gin pairing towards the end of set number one. John Coleman is working on a full review of the SPAC shows, which we hope to post tomorrow. Phish returns to SPAC tonight for gig #2.

I hear alot of people complaining that thery play a lot of the same songs. THEY ALWAYS HAVE! Look at 1999 and see how many times YEM was played who cares it is a great f’in song! Its the gems like makisupa and cities that keep you moving. The first night was great too overall a solid A for both shows!
