Cover Wars: Cold Water Edition

Phish debuted this cover in Portsmouth, VA a week ago today, kudos to Chris King for this fantastic sounding front-of-board tape. We here at HT are of course psyched to see a few new covers making it to the stage. It’s a little shaky at times between sections and the band either forgot about or decided not to sing the final verse of the song – maybe Trey just doesn’t think he looks 47?

Not a great one, but a video nonetheless of the Phish performance:

Railroad Earth has been covering Cold Water for almost ten years and there are 179 recordings of the band playing it on the Live Music Archive dating from early 2001 to just last month. This particular recording is from a very popular download (snatched almost 100,000 times) from Bishop’s Cafe in Vashon Island, WA on April 6th, 2005.

A video of RRE’s Todd Sheaffer performing the tune with some friends:

And closing us out we’ve got this great rendition from YouTube from Austin’s Rogue River String Band:

Checking in on the Crimson & Clover Cover Wars from two weeks ago, Joan Jett & The Blackhearts have emerged victorious. Color me surprised, I thought Hidden Track readers would be bigger My Morning Jacket or Broken Bells fans.
