(Don’t) Blame Canada: Bobby’s Border Issue

Canadian Deadheads couldn’t have been more excited for Furthur to cross the border into The Great White North for a set at the Ottawa Bluesfest on Wednesday night. The Furthur performance almost didn’t happen after Bob Weir was hassled crossing the border leading to a lengthy delay near Thousand Islands. Furthur bassist Phil Lesh stayed with his longtime band mate and the issues were finally worked out just in time to get the two original members of the Grateful Dead to Ottawa for the show.

According to the Ottawa Citizen, the issues stemmed from Weir’s history of drug arrests.  Canadian Officials wanted more information on Weir’s arrests, yet Weir’s last conviction was 30 years ago making it quite difficult to dig up the details the border security wanted. Eventually, court house records from San Diego came through, allowing Weir to head to the Canadian capital. Most reports indicate Furthur treated their Canadian fans to a great show and we really hope this overzealous border guard won’t keep the band from returning to Canada.
