Giveaway: Antibalas – Who Is This America?

Last week Ropeadope Records reissued Antibalas’ landmark 2004 release Who Is This America? complete with a bonus track, Money Talks, produced by Scott Harding. The afrobeat collective’s LP was released just as public opinion towards the Iraq War was turning and the music tackles that issue and others facing the country in the wake of 9/11 under George W.’s rule.

As part of our long-standing Everybody Wins When We Plug Something And In Return They Offer Us Free Shit To Give Away program we’ve got a copy of the album as well as a limited edition Ropeadope Running Man t-shirt for one of our readers. To enter, simply leave a comment below telling us about your favorite t-shirt of all-time. You can only enter once and all entries must be received by Sunday, August 29 at 11:59AM. We’ll pick one entry at random early next week to win the package. Good luck!

  1. My favorite t-shirt of all time is the one with a picture of David Bowie and the caption “I Fucked Mick Jagger.”

  2. excellent prize pack. my favorite t shirt of all time is the shirt Charlie is wearing when he’s huffing paint and him and Dennis come up with ‘Day Man’ on Its Always Sunny. it’s a majestic black stallion bucking before a fiery sunset that could only have been enhanced by Charlie’s inhalant habit. http://tiny.cc/9vsdi

  3. My wife found a great one at a thrift shop a while back. It’s got a picture of Snoopy with his park ranger outfit on and it says, “There’s more to life than disco and root beer”

  4. “I <3 PIE" shirt is my winner. Perfect for all occasions. It comes from my buddy Jack's meat pie shop in Austin, Boomerang's Pies. If your in Austin for ACL Fest, he has a booth with the best food at the fest. All the servers will have "I <3 PIE" shirts on!!

  5. Hard to say, there have been so many shirts…
I guess my favorite shirt was my Hendrix “Kiss the Sky” white T-shirt that I got when that CD came out, somewhere in the early 90’s, I think. Not around anymore but I guess they are re-releasing that CD.

  6. When I was about 15 (12 years ago) I went to a Voodoo Glow Skulls concert and there was only about 20 people there…10 of which were friends of the family and 2 were working the venue. I got to play pool with the Casillas brothers for a while and after their set ended the lead singer came up to me and gave me a free t-shirt and a cd. I still have and wear the shirt today and every time I wear it I think about that night.

  7. My fave t-shirt says “Other people are not your property.” The statement seems agreeable to most people, even though most people don’t actually agree with it.

  8. The Statue of Liberty with the bottom of the statue formed with the words “False Advertising” (during the Bush administration).

  9. I was a skateboarder in my youth and had traded t-shirts with a friend for a SLimeballs (SantaCruz skateboard wheels) shirt that my mother absolutely hated. I’m not quite sure why, aside from the fact it was ugly. Anyway in the rebellious spirit of a thirteen year old, it became my favorite t-shirt, probably because she hated it so much.

  10. the best t-shirts I have are an even tie in my opinion. one is from threadless.com and features the silhouettes of a jazz band standing above the chalk outline of their murdered trumpet player. the kicker is that the body of the trumpet player is falling out of the bass case. The other shirt is from Ropeadope, and features an image of a hand gun that turns into a trumpet at the bell end with the text “Less Bullets More Beats” across the top.

  11. My favorite t-shirt, well when I was at Bonnaroo ’05, I saw this big Thelonius Monk print at the Ropeadope tent, but it wasn’t made into a shirt until several months later.

  12. Favorite t-shirt of all time is the one with the cartoon of the baby chickens and the squirrel that says:
    “Chicks dig my Nuts”

  13. I’ve got a ratty green shirt I made with iron-on letters that spell out RENTAL, after a shirt I once saw Zappa wear. It’s not in great shape anymore, but I still wear it from time to time. Second favorite: the same shirt you’re giving away, bought years ago after I saw Antibalas open up for David Byrne in Minneapolis.

  14. The favorite t-shirt of all-time is a t-shirt with an african child talking i phone and there is a speech balloon saying Fela Kuti above the child. I’ve got it from my sister and i don’t know were she found it but i love it.

  15. The greatest t-shirt I have ever laid eyes on is a Brooklyn Industries t-shirt. It had a mouse and a pigeon hugging.

  16. My favorite t shirt is my Antibalas gasmask t shirt i purchased when they toured Sydney, Australia this year. What a great band!

  17. I have a t shirt covered in wombats, which has to be my favorite. I’ve been wearing it since i was about 12, it seems to have been sculpted for my body. Every year it just seems to fit, it makes little sense. It once prompted an older lady on the street to tell me a story about how she accidentally killed a couple of wombats while driving, it was very sad.

  18. My favorite t-shirt is one my friend designed for me. We lived next door to each other in Red Hook, Brooklyn for a year before he moved West. We used to sit on the roof at night, have a few drinks and talk. He made a t-shirt of the view from the roof, which is basically a car repair shop that looks like a junk yard with rusty corrugated tin everywhere, the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, and the street below. It has a lot of sentimental value.

  19. Fave of all time? Impossible!
Fave at moment & for many years is an Australian Lambchop tour tshirt w a poodle being cradled by one hand & having its hair shorn by clippers w the other hand.

  20. My fav tee is a black one i picked up in Prague. It’s got a keyboard across the chest, with a Prague cityscape dropped into the centre. Underneath it says in tiny letters “Praha – City Of Music”. dope.

  21. hmmm, i have several favorite tees, dificult to choose one. i would say right now my favorite is a boards of canada shirt, a beautiful tone of green, a nice slim fit that doesn´t allow for a potbelly (no beer for me, thanks lol).
Another great tee is a black tortoise tee i picked up at their concert last year in amsterdam, it has an analogue synth at the center of yellow rays.

I also got a few from ropeadope, i love most of their designs, though i wish they wouldn´t sell out so fast.

  22. My favorite t-shirt? its one with a sentence from Gil Scott-Heron “the revolution will not be Televised” offered by a friend of mine. its already very old but still i like to wear it.

  23. favorite tee right now is probably my boards of canada logo tee. green, slim fit, it looks great. close runner up would be a black tortoise tee i picked up at their concert last year in amsterdam.

  24. Don’t get me on the brownose, but my favorite t-shirt is still…

I believe it was the 2004-5 tour, the multicolor 70s brown tee with the Orwelle quote on the back-

“In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”

I think I had well over a hundred thumbs-ups from that one. I still have it even though the cotton has turned to silk and the collar has all but disintegrated.

Rock on Antibalas! And good work consulting on the FELA! broadway release. Everyone should buy a copy!

  25. My favorite Shirt is my Motörhead 1916 Shirt – no idea where it’s at!! I also miss my Bad Religion and my PRINCE Purple rain Shirt, what’s wrong with me??
