F4tF: Montreal for Meat

Here is what the history page on their website has to say about Schwartz’s…

World famous Schwartz’s, serving the best smoked meat from the original recipe of spices since 1928.

Imagine walking through the door and taking a step back 80 years into “Main Street” history in Montreal. A “true” Montreal landmark that has welcomed celebrities and visitors from all over the world. (Picture of restaurant below is from the 1930s)

Schwartz’s was founded in 1928 by Reuben Schwartz, a Jewish immigrant from Romania, and our restaurant has been in the same location ever since, on boulevard Saint-Laurent, where it is now tucked in around funky storefronts and trendy boutiques. The restaurant is a single white-tiled room containing several rows of long narrow tables. Come and enjoy a unique experience.

We’ve protected our tradition for over 80 years by maintaining the standards of old. Unlike other smoked-meat purveyors, who add chemicals to their briskets, Schwartz’s prepares smoked meat the old-fashioned way using a secret blend of fine herbs and spices marinated for 10 days. Our smoked meat is smoked daily and contains no preservatives; just the award winning taste and freshness that have brought celebrities from all around the world to our tables.

So sit back and enjoy. You never know who you might see…

Just so you know that I try to eat healthy as well from time to time, the other restaurant we are going to is Mylos which is all seafood.  Have to counterbalance all of that cured meat and foie gras ya know. I should have tons of pictures and stories to share from yet another food adventure.  Hopefully no meat sweats like the ones I got at this recent wedding in Lake George.

On the food radar is a Miami trip in November where potential stops are Norman’s 180 in Coral Gables and Il Gabbiano whose owners are the original owners of Il Mulino.

One cannot think well, love well, sleep well,
if one has not dined well.

  1. I ate at Au Pied de Cochon and Schwartz’s during my visit to the Montreal Jazzfest. 2 words AWE SOME! try the oxtail for 2 at pied de cochon. It was a special but if they have it, eat it. Schwartz’s is very similar to katz’s here in NY. No frills but great. I’m not sure i could tell you a difference between smoked meat and pastrami. Great food city.
