Video: Frank Zappa – Dinah Moe Humm

This segment from Frank Zappa’s Baby Snakes film, captured at the band’s 1977 Halloween performance at New York City’s Palladium, offers a number of entertaining tidbits. For example, have you ever noticed that this song bears a striking resemblance to Phish’s Reba? Furthermore, this rendition contains a number of In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida teases, and at one point Frank pulls a strange fan onstage to take part in a “Frank Zappa perform-a-like contest.”

  1. Of course you know that Phish started out as Zappa cover band. I knew that you knew so. What’s not to love about Frank. Woot!

  2. Honestly, I def knew Zappa was a HUGE influence on Phish and still is, but I had no idea they essentially took a chunk right from this song for Reba. I’ve listened to a fair amount of Zappa in my day too.

  3. yeah howie, i heard this song a while back and i was like damn, trey sings this pretty much the same rhythm, good tune though, about as weird as every other zappa song i’ve heard 🙂
