ALBUM PREMIERE: Have Gun, Will Travel’s Historical Concept Album ‘Science from an Easy Chair’ (STREAM)

For just about a decade Bradenton, Florida band Have Gun, Will Travel have been making music that can’t be put in a box. It has often been easiest for critics to just call them an alt. country band, and there are good enough reasons for that. But, whether it be pop-infused choruses or personal, soul-baring folk, the quartet have far more going on to be lazily stuffed into one vague genre box. This has never been more true than on their fifth full-length studio album Science From an Easy Chair, which we are excited to offer as an exclusive advance stream right here on Glide ahead of its release July 31st on This Is American Music.

Most of us don’t typically think of a band like Have Gun, Will Travel as taking on the almighty concept album, and especially an epic tale of a globe-trotting adventurer, but that is exactly what they did on Science From an Easy Chair. And guess what? It works. The album is based entirely on British explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton and his 1914-16 Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition. Named after a book by Ray Lankester on popular science from which the crew of Shackleton’s ship would read aloud, the album delivers its own interpretation of this amazing story of survival and endurance. The release commemorates the 100th anniversary of the epic journey. The song titles and lyrics, as well as the music, capture the initial optimism of setting off on a magnificient quest, the hardships and dangers faced by the crew, and the ultimate resolution. Fans of HGWT can expect the same band they know and love, just with a historical story to tell through their songs. On the album, frontman Matt Burke says, “With this record being a concept album based on historical events, we definitely wanted to honor the story. But at the same time, we’re hoping the songs will stand on their own outside of the context of the story.”
