Poet, Author, Punk Rocker Jim Carroll Dies

Poet/author/punk rocker Jim Carroll died Friday from a heart attack. He was 60.

Carroll was a rising star of New York City’s art scene during the 1970s. His 1978 autobiographical memoir – “The Basketball Diaries” – was made in to a 1995 movie featuring a pre-“Titanic” Leonardo DiCaprio and depicted the author’s basketball playing, drug ingesting teenage years.

Urged on by Patti Smith, Carroll turned to punk rock. Under the name Jim Carroll Band in 1980 he released Catholic Boy featuring the song “People Who Died,” which many radio stations refused to play because of lyrics describing friends’ tragic endings.

Carroll first gained recognition for his poetry, publishing “Organic Trains” in 1967 and “4 Ups and 1 Down” in 1970.”
