Adam Steffey: One More for the Road

[rating=4.00]

Adam Steffey – regarded as one of the most influential mandolin players of this generation – was instrumental in founding some of the foremost bluegrass acts in recent years such (Allison Krauss and Union Station, Mountain Heart, The Dan Tyminski Band).  So it comes as no surprise on his sophomore release, One More for the Road, that Steffey recruits a “who’s who” of bluegrass players.

Complimenting his effortless mandolin playing, alongside guest vocalist, Chris Stapelton, the title track features Steffey’s heartfelt vocals pleading “ One more day, so I can make it right.”  Tyminski lends his own vocals to the barn stomper, “Let Me Fall,” while their former Union Station bandmate, Allison Krauss’ angel-like voice shines on “Warm Kentucky Sunshine.” It’s not all about the lyrical harmonies though, as Steffey and bandmates get plenty of room to flex their instrumental chops on “Barnyard Playboy” and “Half Past Four,” proving why these players are considered masters of their instruments.  Virtuosic musicianship and a conglomeration of vocal talents make Steffey’s latest effort the most memorable bluegrass release of the year.
