Tarantino’s ‘The Hateful 8’ Looks Positively Marvelous

Strap yourself in. The trailer for Quentin Tarantino’s latest epic, The Hateful 8, is here, and it looks to be a doozy.

Like his previous movie, Django Unchained (and to a certain extent, Kill Bill vol 2) The Hateful 8 has Tarantino exploring the western genre, as eight strangers come together to weather a blizzard under less than ideal circumstances.

Kurt Russell stars as John “The Hangman” Ruth, a bounty hunter known for ensuring his charges always see the wrong end of the noose. After capturing murderess Daisy Demergue (Jennifer Jason Leigh), Ruth finds himself caught in a snow storm and holes up in a haberdashery with a cast of western tropes—outlaws, sheriffs, cowboys—and must protect his bounty.

Tarantino stalwarts Tim Roth, Michael Madsen, and Samuel L. Jackson join the fracas in what looks to be a movie chock full of Tarantino’s slick style. From what we see here, the dialogue is smooth and cool, the setting is claustrophobic and feels ripe for Tarantino’s guys-talking-across-a-table motif, and everyone looks cooler than hell. Leigh, especially, looks as though she’s going to give a particularly psychotic performance and is almost unrecognizable as Demergue.

This is, fittingly, the eighth film from Tarantino and it looks like it might just be his best. Of course, it’d be hard to surpass the brilliance of Django Unchained, but Tarantino has a knack for making sure every new project his directs his better than his last. The Hateful 8 opens Christmas Day, and will be shown in theaters equipped to screen 70mm. It looks like it’s going to be worth the effort and is sure to be a delight for Tarantino’s fans.
