VIDEO PREMIERE: Grace & Tony Go Stalker In “The 1”

When husband-and-wife duo Grace & Tony began writing songs for their new album, Phantasmagoric, they didn’t plan on crafting 10 tracks that sound as if  they belong in a macabre Broadway musical. But these dramatic tales of plagues, serial killers, mass suicide, Frankenstein’s nameless creation and similar subjects are so inherently theatrical, they’d be right at home in a Sondheim or Brecht-Weill classic.

Though Phantasmagoric came out on September 25th, Glide Magazine is excited to offer the exclusive premiere of the new music video for “The 1”. To give you a behind-the scenes look at the video, Grace & Tony took some time to answer some questions.

Who came up with the idea for the video?

I (Tony) wrote the concept for this video at least a year or more ago. We wanted to take the “stalker gets the girl” theme from “The 1” and twist it. I think everyone would like to play a badass hit man or woman at some point in their lives, and when you write and fund your own projects who’s to stop you, right!? We shot this video with Bobby Wolff, from Zuus Country in Nashville. We had worked with Bobby before on our “Resonate”video, and we knew he would be perfect for this concept. There were some pretty intense moments on the set. Especially the scene where Grace abducts Ariel (the wife). We were all squirming just a little at how intense that was. We are thankful to see this vision finally come to together and are eager to get people’s reactions.

You said there were some pretty intense moments on set — was any of it difficult or uncomfortable to shoot given the storyline?

The scene where Grace was wrestling and fighting with Ariel (the wife) was very intense and a little unsettling, ha ha! Grace was having a hard time with it because she didn’t want to be too rough. The camera crew finally got her angry enough to really pour it on. There were a lot of wide eyes around the room, and I think the intensity really showed up in the video.

Where did you film the video?

We shot the video in East Nashville at our friend Pete Teselky’s house, who you’ll also hear playing drums on the Phantasmagoric album.

You (Tony) wrote the concept, but what prompted the idea?  Did you see/hear/read something that gave you the story idea encapsulated in the video?

This song is about a stalker who gets the girl, basically. In the song they both refer to each other as “The 1.” We thought it would be fun to take a different approach to that story line. Being hit men and women in a video sounded like a lot of fun!

Okay, so “The 1” is about a stalker who gets the girl, but what made you write that song?  What is the story behind it?

We like to write creepy scenarios. We felt it would be very interesting if we had the female character be not so helpless. She’s lonely and adventurous and just a little bit crazy. I think she calls the stalker’s bluff a bit. When I first met Grace I’d been stalking her social media, so maybe this is our story, ha ha!

How was it to record that song in the studio?  Any interesting studio stories?

This was the first song we wrote for the Phantasmagoric album, so we’d been performing it live for quite awhile. We were pretty dialed in when we hit the studio and were able to knock this one out playing together as a band. Love Pete’s drumming on this one. He really went for it.

How do you feel about the song itself and about the video when paired with it?  Do you think it makes the song more intense or even darker with this video treatment?

Definitely think it gives the song a more sinister feeling. We had intended it to be a little more innocent in the beginning but the video idea definitely kicked it up a bunch of notches. It’s so beautifully dark.
