Film Bits: ‘Suicide Squad’ Announces Extended Cut; Watch Jamie Foxx in ‘Sleepless’ Trailer; Criterion Collection Announces Bold New Streaming Service

‘Suicide Squad’ Officially Getting Extended Cut

rsz_suicide_squad

Suicide Squad has officially been given an extended cut for the home video release, continuing Warner Brothers’ baffling trend established by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Neither film was particularly well received by critics, though the extended release of Dawn of Justice fared better upon its release. If Suicide Squad performs similarly, the question becomes why doesn’t WB just let these movies be what they’re going to be? There are better ways to sell DVDs than making them extended cuts; showing good movies in the theater is one of them. It’ll be interesting to see how critical and audience reactions to Suicide Squad’s extended cut differ from the theatrical cut. If, like its predecessor, it’s better received, the lesson WB needs to take away is to stop screwing up a good thing.
