SONG PREMIERE: Adrian + Meredith Share Jazzy Folk Rabble-Rouser “Fixer”

It’s easy to generalize Nashville these days as the home to market-driven pop “country” for the masses, but anyone who’s been paying attention can tell you that’s only a small part of what’s actually coming out of Music City. With their debut album More Than A Little, which comes out on November 4th, husband and wife duo Adrian + Meredith along with their talented band are making a different sort of roots racket. Based out of the hip part of town, East Nashville, the group puts its own spin on Americana music by throwing in a punk rock spirit to complement old-timey folk, early swing and jazz, and a rock and roll sneer.

Today we are excited to premiere “Fixer” off More Than A Little right here on Glide Magazine. With the heavy presence of the banjo, the tune has a gypsy jazz type of feel but with twangier edge. The tune is rousing and you can picture it as the soundtrack for a classy house party erupting into a shindig, yet there is also something ominous about it with a haunting harmonica solo.

Reflecting on the song, Adrian and Meredith say, “Although we’re married now, we’ve dated our share. Sometimes only one date is enough to understand people can be very strange. ‘She’s a devil of a woman’ starts the look-back at the strange relationship moments we all find ourselves in. Sometimes it takes a move to Nashville to leave your ghosts behind, if not temporarily. Sometimes you tour through your hometown and run into your tattered history. This song is for the ex that doesn’t stir feelings of anger or sadness, but more boundaries and distance. Some ex’s have a lasting connection and you’re just glad you got out alive, despite the amount of smirk on your face when looking back. Musically, this had to be a throwback hot-jazz sound; the first time we played ‘Fixer’ live, with The Nashville Horns, we knew we had to record this song. Not many bands are doing a ‘Benny Goodman – Sing Sing Sing’ sound in East Nashville. As the horns heat up, the story goes down: ‘We bought a fixer (upper) on the west-end’, and finally ‘I shoulda seen it coming, shoulda seen the way she walks, running away’.”
