Film Bits: ‘The Batman’ Nears Production Date; ‘Gerald’s Game’ Officially in Play

‘The Batman’ Eyes Spring Date for Production

Batman Ben Affleck

Recently confirmed as the villain Deathstroke in Ben Affleck’s upcoming The Batman, actor Joe Manganiello hinted that Batman’s first solo outing in the DCEU would begin filming sometime next spring. This comes on the heels of the news that the movie was about “18 months out” according to executives at Warner Brothers. While there’s no indication of when the movie might be released, WB recently updated their release slate to include unnamed films for October 5, 2018 and November 1, 2019. Given Manganiello’s statements and the previous statements from Warner Brothers, it seems likely that we’ll see the Caped Crusader fly solo in October 2018, shortly after his next appearance in Justice League.

‘Captain Planet’ Movie in Development

Leonardo DiCaprio is reportedly working on a cinematic version of Captain Planet, the 90’s cartoon that tackled environmental issues, with Scream Queens star Glen Powell, and his writing partner Jono Matt, in talks to pen the script. The project seems a good fit for DiCaprio, who has, in recent years, taken up global warming as a passion project, famously using his acceptance speech at this year’s Oscars to espouse the importance of protecting our planet. While Powell and Matt have yet to be given the job, reportedly their script takes place years after the events of the series, with the titular Captain Planet now a wash up. That bizarre take mirrors our culture’s own relationship with environmentalism, which experienced a quick expansion of popular conscience in the 90’s before politicians and corporations begun muddling the waters of research.

Don DeLillo’s ‘White Noise’ Being Adapted

white-noise

BB Film Productions has optioned the rights to produce Don DeLillo’s seminal work White Noise for the big screen, with Michael Almereyda (Experimenter) set to adapt. The award winning novel became a critical hit and pushed DeLillo into the mainstream of literary heavyweights. Given the novel’s themes regarding media saturation and the dumbing down of culture, White Noise feels an odd choice for the cinematic treatment, but I guess that’s never stopped Hollywood before. The film is still in the early stages of development, and no word yet on when it might be expected to see the light of day.
