Film Bits: ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Once Again Hooks Us on A Feeling; Wolverine Gets Old for ‘Logan’

‘Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’ Unleashes First Trailer, Poster

The first teaser for the highly anticipated Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 was quietly released online yesterday, giving audiences their first glimpse at Marvel’s other superhero team as they head back into action. Not much is revealed regarding the plot to this outing, but the trailer does raise the excitement level, and it’s good to see the gang back together again. Not to mention, the squee-worthy brief appearance of baby Groot, whom we last saw secretly dancing to the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back.” From all appearances, it doesn’t seem that they’ve switched the formula up too much for this outing, but I guess we can file that under “if it’s ain’t broke.”

In addition to the trailer, we also got our first poster for the film, which hints at some intriguing possibilities for the future. The inclusion of Michael Rooker’s Yandu and Karen Gillan’s Nebula standing with the familiar team raises some questions about possible alliances and an expansion of the team. When last we left both characters, neither were particularly happy with the Guardians, with Yandu having been ripped off and Nebula going back to her adopted father (kidnapper) Thanos. Is there some new force that brought them all together? Marvel does have the tendency to up the stakes in sequels, and these kinds of villain-hero team ups are staples in the comic book world, so it makes sense. Also of note: Baby Groot, once again. This time hiding behind Peter Quill’s (Chris Pratt) leg like a curious kitten checking out their surroundings. Squee-worthy, indeed. Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2 is slated for released on May 5, 2017.

‘Logan’ Trailer Brings the ‘Hurt’

logan

How many times have we been burned by the X-Men franchise? That’s probably a bit too subjective, given that a lot of people, somehow, still enjoy the films, even after everything that’s gone wrong. Curiously, the Fox-owned Marvel franchise keeps trucking along, and once again we’re back to Wolverine. Hugh Jackman has played the popular mutant since 2000, and the next outing, Logan, promises to be his last turn. The trailer, set to the still haunting cover of “Hurt” by Johnny Cash, does look promising but, again I ask, how many times have we been burned? Even Apocalypse looked awesome when its trailer dropped, so I don’t quite know what to make of how awesome this trailer is. And, to be clear, it’s an awesome trailer. The film brings Patrick Stewart back into the role of Professor Xavier, after being played by James MacAvoy in the last several films due to changes in the timeline caused by…you know what? I don’t care anymore. Logan is set for release on March 3, 2017.

We’re Getting Another ‘Willy Wonka’ For Some Reason?

Gene Wilder Willy Wonka

If there’s anything Hollywood loves more than a great idea, it’s a bad idea. And history has shown that remaking Willy Wonka is, in fact, a bad idea. Naturally, there’s talk of another remake because, well, why the hell not? Said to be focusing on the famed eccentric chocolatier in the days before his golden ticket contest, the film is set to be written by Simon Rich (Inside Out) and produced by Fantastic Beast producer David Heyman. Not much else is known about the project at this time, though the proximity to Gene Wilder’s death, on top of the poor history of Wonka remakes, makes this seem a little odd.

Most Brutal Story in Heavy Metal History Being Developed Into A Movie

euronymous

Most people aren’t terribly familiar with the strange and tragic tale of Mayhem, the Norwegian black metal band who led the rise of brutality to the point of death and infamy. Authors Michael Moynihan and Didrik Soderlind documented the rise and fall of the band, as well as the music scene they spearheaded, in their book Lords of Chaos, which is now becoming a motion picture starring Rory Culkin as the ill-fated Mayhem guitarist/bandleader Euronymous, who was murdered by former band member Varg ‘Count Grishnackh’ Vikernes, also of Burzum, who is to be  played by Emory Cohen in the upcoming film. Mayhem’s tale is a truly bizarre journey through the rise of Nordic metal, which includes church burnings, blasphemy, and an unrelenting quest for metal purity that should make for an intriguing big screen motion picture. Give a listen to their seminal album, De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas, below.
