SONG PREMIERE: Brownout’s Brown Sabbath Put Funky Latin Spin On Black Sabbath’s “Electric Funeral”

Who would’ve guessed that members of Austin’s Latin funk projects Brownout and Grupo Fantasma would be responsible for one of most solid tributes to heavy metal legends Black Sabbath that has ever been made? After a handful of acclaimed Sabbath-centric live performances, this gaggle of musicians decided to immortalize their take on the band’s music with the 2014 release of Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath, Volume I. Clearly they nailed the music of Sabbath with brassy flair as the band played numerous festivals, including appearances at Bonnaroo, Austin Psych Fest and Pickathon, winning over metalheads and lovers of funky dance music all at once.

On October 28th Brown Sabbath returns with Volume II, a collection of covers running through 1975’s Sabotage with an added emphasis on guitar elements, although there are still oodles of horns and blasts of spicy percussion throughout each song. Today we are excited to premiere Brownout’s take on one of Black Sabbath’s most sinister songs, “Electric Funeral”, right here on Glide Magazine.

“We gravitated to ‘Electric Funeral’ because of its heavy, sludgy psychedelic vibe. The groove changes made it perfect for us to bring in cool percussion elements & use the horns to not only soar at times but to also enhance the songs dark, dooms-day moodiness in a unique way. It’s a strong, identifiable vocal melody and this arrangement allowed me some freedom to take a couple of chances vocally which is always great. Killer track.” – Alex Marrero (Brownout Presents Brown Sabbath)
