Film Bits: ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Trailer Tease; Emma Watson Stars with Tom Hanks in ‘The Circle’

Marvel and Sony Release Trailer Teaser for ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

The trailer for Spider-Man: Homecoming drops tomorrow, but Marvel and Sony have given us a small taste of what to expect in the form of a trailer teaser. What little we do see is, well, pretty goddamn Spider-Man as the young Tom Holland plays Peter Parker with all the youthful exuberance once found in the comic books. We also get a better look at some of the Tony Stark upgrades to the Spider suit, most notably the webbed wings that are an occasional feature in the comic books, depending on who’s drawing him. That little detail has been more or less abandoned in recent iterations however, so it’s nice to see the homage to the classic history of the character. We also get reintroduced to Jon Favreau’s Happy, Tony Stark’s driver. It was a bit disheartening to see a reliance on footage seemingly shot by Spider-Man himself (though they did introduce the concept of Spider-Man’s growing viral fame in Civil War) but thankfully that doesn’t seem to be the main theme. We’ll get a better look at the movie tomorrow when the full trailer drops. Spider-Man: Homecoming opens July 7, 2017.

Emma Watson and Tom Hanks Shine in ‘The Circle’ Trailer

the-circle

Emma Watson continues her post-Harry Potter ascendency with a co-starring role alongside Tom Hanks. If that’s not “making it” then I don’t know what it is. The two lend their talents to The Circle, James Ponsoldt’s (The End of the Tour) adaptation of the Dave Eggers novel. Watson stars as Mae Holland, a young woman who lands a job at a high powered tech firm called The Circle. Based on the trailer, the film looks to be another musing on the role of technology and privacy in today’s increasingly connected world, a theme that’s gaining increasing prominence as years go by. Difficult to judge how this film is going to turn out based on the brief trailer seen here, but I’m not unintrigued by any means. The Circle opens everywhere on April 28, 2017.

‘Fifty Shades Darker’ Still Looks Crazy Boring

Universal released another trailer for Fifty Shades Darker, which looks to be a mind-numbingly stupid sequel to a mind-numbingly stupid movie (Fifty Shades of Grey) both of which were based on a mind-numbingly stupid book series. This time there’s masks, and bizarre histories, and competing interests and…I suddenly stopped caring. No judgment if you do care though. To each their own. Hope you enjoy the trailer. Fifty Shades Darker hits theaters on February 10, 2017.
